New Delhi: In Europe, a dissident, Li Ying, is provoking anger from Beijing, prompting the Chinese authorities to target his social media followers, CNN reported. Li Ying, a Chinese lawyer and dissident artist based in Italy, has been accused of “posting politically sensitive topics” on his social media account, X.
In a statement released on Tuesday, police said that they had asked Li to “chat” with them about the “sensitive accounts” he followed on X.
His actions, Chinese government claims, are a clear violation of rules which strictly prohibit “surfing” on other people’s social media accounts. The Chinese government has been cracking down on social media dissent in recent years. In 2022, Li’s X account became one of the most popular accounts of a Chinese dissident artist.
During the protests against Xi Jinping’s zero-Covid policy, Li often used his account to share uncensored information about the government and society.
