Islamabad, Jun 10 (PTI) At least 10 people from the same family were killed and 13 others injured on Wednesday when a passenger van caught fire after falling into a ravine near the Pakistani capital.

The vehicle was on its way to the summer hill resort of Murree when it fell while negotiating a sharp turn on the Islamabad-Murree Expressway near Khajut, the National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) said.

According to the police, the wagon caught fire after it fell into the ravine, resulting in at least 10 deaths, including five children, and injuries to 13 others.

“The victims are from the same family and were travelling from Multan to Murree,” the NHMP said in a statement.

Some of the injured were stated to be in critical condition.

The rescue team reached the spot and evacuated the victims to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) hospital in Islamabad, which also confirmed the death toll.

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq expressed deep sorrow and grief over the loss of life, extending his heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the affected families.

“I share the grief of the families of the deceased in the accident,” Sadiq said.

Murree, located close to Islamabad and connected through a modern expressway, is among the favourites for tourists, who come from different parts of the country to beat the heat in summer and enjoy snow in winter. PTI SH ZH ZH
