New Delhi: Only time will tell how effective Prime Minister Modi’s speech will prove to be in this coronavirus crisis but it was good enough to find favour with some of his most vocal opponents, such as Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

And this is perhaps the kindest P. Chidambaram, Congress, has been to PM Modi, for sure.

Here’s one for the history books: activist Shehla Rashid, who never sees eye to eye with the BJP, actually agrees with PM Modi…

Still, never fear, some critics are still here: namely, Congress members Sanjay Jha, Saral Patel and Shama Mohamed whose questions do deserve replies but maybe not from the PM when he makes an address to the nation?

There is simply no pleasing some people: political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla calls the ‘Janata curfew’ a PR stunt.

Kerala’s finance minister Thomas Isaac is more impressed by the actions of his chief minister.

And, Swaraj Abhiyan President Yogendra Yadav is more concerned with the perfect “protest” model.

Bollywood celebrities also pledge to follow ‘Janata Curfew’ on 22 March. Check out some stars.

Actor Akshay Kumar is all praise.

His wife, author and actor Twinkle Khanna, who is often tough on the Modi government, pitched in her support as well. Is this the ‘Kumar’ effect?

Amitabh Bachchan ‘wholeheartedly’ supported the initiative. As did Ayushmann Khurrana…

The Janata curfew also won support from some unusual suspects — actor Shabana Azmi and director Mahesh Bhatt.

Cricketers, too, fell in line to observe ‘curfew’ this Sunday. India’s cricket coach Ravi Shastri and former cricketer Mohammad Kaif lead the charge.

Amidst the roar of congratulations for Modi’s speech, a sobering reminder for the Prime Minister from a doctor.

And lastly, on an entirely unrelated note, BJP Mahila Morcha social media in-charge Priti Gandhi is delighted that comedian Kunal Kamra got his comeuppance from the Supreme Court, for heckling Republic TV anchor Arnab Goswami on a flight.

  1. Whatever Chidambaram has lately been saying appears governed not by his famed intelligence or acumen, but only on the touchstone of ‘will it please Rahul’?. Anything that attacks Modi, derides his achievements, and ridicules him is sweet music to Rahul, as he himself is never tired of doing; even when it has cost him many elections. PC is already in the good books of Sonia. Soon, it is Rahul who is likely to call the shots. And PC, being very much a part of the “Old Brigade” has to be ‘recognised’ by Rahul as ‘his’ man to further flourish in Congress.

  2. Few of the Congressies oppose just for the sake of it. I think Ila’s article on this subject in The Print subtly analyses approach of life is important than livelihood. People talking freebies announced by Kerala CM and people talking about push for economy only shows how insane the people are and these are the people who have education and experience in box and came empty handed to offer comment. This clearly shows they have no knowledge of possible pandemic waiting to happen if not addressed properly.

    • You mean “addressed properly” with a glib tongue, wearing the 1500th newly-stitched Nehru jacket? Sorry Ms/Mr Curious, I just felt curious.

  3. Narendra Modi feels so insecure, I don’t know why, that he has to again and again, and unnecessarily, put people to torture and inconvenience, only to test their loyalty to him. This janata curfew is going to prove a mini demonetization moment. Trains will come to a standstill on 22nd, all trains will be cancelled on that day – – for what reason? Is coronavirus going to be active only on Sunday? It is exasperating to try to decode Mr Modi’s mind. This gentleman is just one huge blubber of ego. To which a suave tongue is attached. No brains!
