Formally and openly engaging the Taliban is a high-cost strategy. But India has long supported dissidents and insurgents to stand for elections within its own boundaries.
The next few months will give India, Pakistan backchannel space to talk some more, enough for the Americans to unveil their new strategy on Afghanistan.
Giving peace a chance is out of the question in Afghanistan. Several recent attacks show someone in the neighbourhood is not happy with the way the peace talks are going.
Pakistan hasn’t waited in the wings for 19 years to suddenly abandon its need to manage its northern neighbour and control the great game in Inner Asia.
Various factors have dictated Chinese operations in Afghanistan over the years. But with India back in the Afghan game after decades, China would do well to take stock of the new threats.
Just like Phase 3, in this round too, the NDA stands to lose ground due to the sheer number of seats it had won the last time — 39 of the 49 seats, of which the BJP alone had won 32.
India’s defence sector is trying to penetrate the African market. But with China already extending significant influence, India must now play catch-up.
Discussion about outcome of Lok Sabha polls continues to boil in cauldron of expectations only from BJP. Now reverse this equation, what if we asked about the performance of the 'loser'?
What is written is completely contradictory.if USA can’t enforce what it wants today ,how it can do after leaving Afghanistan. How is it opined that USA and China will work together without china getting its price from west .
Leaving Afghanistan will embolden terrorist forces today they may be uttering some good words.
After defeating. Two world powers, Russia and USA the Taliban will think itself unbeatable and with some good reasons. It Will be naive to think that the Taliban will be content in ruling only Afghanistan. First it will turn it’s focus on correcting Durand line and then Kashmir valley.
If you impose particular group ( northern alliance ) by force on majority then that will not guarantee stability in Afghanistan of any kind !!! One may like it or not but US has miserably failed due to proxy fight given by Pakistan ! After 9/11 Pakistan had no choice but to allow US to go after Taliban, however in due course of time turned the table the way it was done against Soviet Union !!!
Is Taliban good for Afghanistan? The simple answer is ‘No’. Because Taliban follows hardcore Islamic practices as ISIS was doing and its not democratically elected (Taliban leaders are local village leaders), it supported terrorists in the past. Taliban does command lots of hard-power and couldn’t be controlled by the Afghanistan govt. So Afghanistan govt. needs to share some power with Taliban, but it should ensure that Taliban’s power is waned. All good friends of Afghanistan should support it in this regard. Taliban must become history as was ISIS.
US ends Afghan Occupation.
US viceroy Ghani leaves.
Afghan governance restored and the Afghan Taliban takes control BUT has a balanced and inclusive new government.
All foreign forces and foreign contractors leave.
Indian funding for terror grouos and proxies aimed at hurting, destabilising Pakistani soil are dismantled. Indian consulates set up against Pakistani border are dismantled.
Region prospers and legitimate trgional stakeholders e sure peace and stability in Afghanistan. Legitimate partners being Pakistan, Iran, Russia, Central Asian states. and China but also Turkey and Qatar.
Northern Alliance better armed than before. Will not be cakewalk for the Taliban. Definitely a Civil War in the offing if Taliban behave in the same way as in 1990s. India will definitely play its part in ensuring that Afghan Soil is not used for training and directing the Jihadis towards India.
Well written article !
Two problems: 1) people of afghanistan might have enough power to decide whether they want Taliban in power or not 2) Assumption that US exit will be a strategic blow to Taliban. Dont see this happening. May be merely a tactical blow.
