Is China really dominating South Asia? China which couldn’t retain its friendly relationship with all in ASEAN or East Asian neighbours can’t match India’s influence in ASEAN or South Asia. Time will show who succeeds.
No one should even think of slaying the dragon. China is an immense economy, with huge trade volumes, growing capital surpluses which it can export in the form of much needed projects. We have been viewing South Asia in geopolitical terms, clouded by our unending standoff with Pakistan, which makes Saarc possibly the least productive regional grouping in the world. Time for basic reordering of our foreign policy, which has become too US centric and sometimes views the world in security oriented, zero sum terms, like the quad. More than the military and geopolitical rise of China, which is now in America’s league, we have failed to think through the implications of its relentless economic resurgence. It is taking over South Asia, without a shot being fired.
