When the East India Company was expanding its territories in India in the late 18th century, the prime method of defeating the enemy, including Tipu Sultan, was by laying siege to the forts. It is another matter that just the siege was never enough to defeat the enemy. At some time during the siege the defences had to be breached and the fortress attacked. The consequences were devastating both for the victor and the loser.
