Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as Assam Chief Minister in May 2021. Till 2015, Sarma was a part of the Congress and a young and ambitious leader considered close to then CM Tarun Gogoi. In 2011, Sarma manged the election campaign for the Congress, and helped it win an unprecedented 79 seats in the 126-member Assam assembly. However, with Tarun Gogoi projecting his son Gaurav as the face of Assam’s Congress leadership, he quit.
In 2015, Sarma joined the BJP and quickly rose to prominence becoming finance minister in the Sarbananda Sonowal government, then convener of the North East Development Alliance (NEDA). He has been credited as the man behind the BJP’s increased foothold in the Northeast.
As Assam Chief Minister, Sarma — though an ‘outsider — has steered many policies seemingly aligned with the Sangh agenda, including the passage of the Assam Cattle Preservation (Amendment) Act, asking for the reverification of the National Register of Citizens and carrying out demolition drives to evict “illegal encroachers”.
Bad is bad and good is good. Assamese people are very simple and secular and so it is burning now …
I think INR WILL COME TOPOWER ON 2019.
What bakwas gogoi sir. Hemant is s courageous leader. We should keep 1951 as base date. Whole world is threatened by Muslim fanatics like isis al quaida. In district like dhubri barpeta nagaon Muslim immigrant have become rightful citizen due to 1971 cut off.
Himanta Biswa Sarma would still have been in the Congress if Mr Gogoi had allowed him to grow to the natural leadership position to which he aspired, not tried to pass it on to his son. Communalism is bad, of course, but so is parochialism. If the north east is to develop and prosper, it must ease up on its exclusivity and aversion to “ outsiders “ from the “ mainland “.
Right mate, Himanta is evil but Gogoi is Devil. I still wonder how this jocker manned the CM’s chair for 15 long years. His only aim is to secure the future of his Hijda of a son. All his concerns for Assam and Assamese is nonsense.
