Sorry to say but HAL track record is not very impressive. It has been a case of beggars cannot be choosers. First Tejas was built in 2001 & delivered in 2003. Till today we don’t know when it will come finally ?. Story of MIGS & up gradation has been poor. More that 400 aircrafts have fallen from the air Killing 250+ good pilots. So what is the point ?
Airbus has a brand new twin engine utility copter called the H160. It is being ordered by all branches of the French armed forces. I wonder why they are not offering that as it is the natural successor to older French utility helicopters.
Last night I saw a snippet of Walk the Talk with Arun Shourie at the Maruti plant, dating from 2003. Precisely this point. The public sector belongs to “ India “, in a way the private sector doesn’t. So “ taking “ something from HAL and giving it to a private firm resonates. No reason for HAL to be borrowing money to pay salaries.
