Income Tax officials looking at your social media to track your worth

Income Tax Department officials may be looking at your social media to track your real net worth. According to Tarun Wig, co-founder of Innefu Labs, officials scan social media accounts to know what kind of valuable materials, properties and assets individuals may own, but are not paying tax on.

Innefu is a cybersecurity company specialising in OSINT (open source intelligence), which is based on information available publicly on blogs, social media and in print newspapers.

Innefu helps private and state agencies gather insight by tracking such publicly available evidence and ‘connecting the dots’. It has previously worked with the BSF and the CRPF.

Asked how Wig knows about the income tax officers and social media tricks, he simply said: “Don’t ask me how I know, I just do.”

How Army chief-designate Lt Gen. Naravane earned respect from all armed forces

Lt Gen. Manoj Mukund Naravane, the Army chief-designate, is a much respected man in the services and not just in his force alone. Those who have served with him or have spoken to him know that he is a quintessential Army man; a stickler for rules and the best traditions of the Army.

The awe and respect for him in the armed forces as a whole grew tremendously in 2017, when he was the General Officer Commanding (GOC) in Delhi. He refused to entertain the Special Protection Group’s request of not standing behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech the ramparts of the Red Fort. Traditionally, the GoC always stands behind the PM on this occasion, and Naravane refused to stand down. There were murmurs in the corridors of power at the time that he had sought a written order.

When asked, a top officer who is still serving, said it was a request from the Prime Minister’s Office and, after proper discussion in the Ministry of Defence and communication from the Army chief, Lt Gen. Naravane did not stand behind PM Modi. It was said that there were no written protocols; just a practice followed over the years.

After escorting Modi to the dais, Lt Gen. Naravane returned to his seat in the audience and, at the end of the speech, got up to escort him.

His refusal to stand down earned him many admirers within the force and outside.

When a birthday ad made Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath furious

Kamal Nath’s 73rd birthday on 18 November was no small affair. State ministers and legislators flocked to pay their respects to the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, and a few of them also got together to put out an advertisement in the Bhopal edition of Dainik Bhaskar, listing all the things that make him “special”.

But the advertisement, which appeared on page 13 of the edition dated 18 November, only infuriated Nath.

Of the eight reasons listed, one was his 1996 defeat to Sunder Lal Patwa in his citadel, Chhindwara. “Uss samay unhe Sunder Lal Patwa ne chunaav maidaan mein patkhani de di (That time Sunder Lal Patva slammed him to the mat in the poll battle),” the advertisement said.

Another point was about Nath picking a fight with a judge “on purpose” in 1979, when Sanjay Gandhi was sent to Tihar jail. Indira Gandhi was worried about her son, the ad said, so Nath ticked off a judge, landed up in Tihar for seven days, and stayed with Sanjay.

A third point was that Nath could only become the CM in 2018 because he had Digvijaya Singh’s backing. “In 1993, there was talk that Nath would become CM. It is said that Arjun Singh put forth Digvijaya Singh’s name instead. So Kamal Nath missed out on becoming the CM. Twenty-five years later, it is only because of Digvijaya’s support that Nath has been given the chance to be the CM,” the ad stated.

It should come as no surprise that the very next day, an amended version of the advertisement appeared, this time with only five reasons that make Nath “special”, and the faith the people of Madhya Pradesh place in him.

Painter-MP set to publish over 70 sketches of politicians

Noted painter and Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jogen Chowdhury is set to complete his term in the next session of Parliament. But in his time in the Upper House, Chowdhury has sat on the last-but-one bench and sketched more than 70 politicians — from the late Arun Jaitley to former PM Manmohan Singh. He is now preparing to publish these sketches in the form of a book, accompanied by poetic snippets.

  1. Yet another BS. Respect grows slowly while you get bad imag in a flash. Nothing unique for this case. Actually such claims are premature and does disservice to Lt Gen. Naravane.

  2. On SPG’s ‘request’, why did the General NOT seek guidance / direction from the Chief of Army Staff? As is the norm. Why was he so keen to stand behind the PM, when there was nothing written available on this count? Why did he insist that he WILL stand behind the PM (and get nation wide media coverage), until or unless he was kicked out with a written order? To me, this is depressing. It is demeaning event for the office of the COAS, NOT a glory, as is being made out.
