Chennai: With the Tamil Nadu elections throwing a hung assembly and the single-largest party TVK looking for post-poll allies to form government, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has asserted it will stay with the DMK, the outgoing ruling party.
In a firm statement issued Wednesday, IUML chief K.M. Khader Mohideen declared: “We were with Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin yesterday, we are with him today and we will be with him tomorrow too.”
While the TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, it fell short of the majority mark of 118. With the Congress party offering its support, the tally goes up to 113.
While the Congress’ move to offer support to the TVK was seen by many as a pragmatic bid to gain leverage in the post-poll scenario, IUML’s stand continues to support DMK.
In the current fluid political scenario in the state, with political loyalties shifting quickly, the Congress, which was also in the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, earlier in the day offered its support to the TVK.
But the Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) continues to explore possibilities of forming a government by inviting other DMK allies including Communist Party of India, CPI (Marxist), IUML and the VCK (Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi), all of which have secured two seats each.

The long standing DMK-IUML relationship has gained the support of minorities. “The DMK-Indian Union Muslim League relationship is not an election-time relationship, it is a policy-based alliance,” Mohideen said in the statement.
IUML leaders reiterated their commitment to the Secular Progressive Alliance, affirming they would abide by whatever decision its leadership takes.
Party workers in districts like Vellore, Ramanathapuram, and Chennai also supported the announcement, viewing it as a reaffirmation of trust in Stalin’s leadership and the alliance’s progressive agenda focused on social justice, minority welfare, and inclusive development.
