Guwahati: The Tripura Police Sunday arrested Trinamool Youth Congress President Saayoni Ghosh on attempt to murder charges for allegedly trying to mow down Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in Agartala at a meeting addressed by Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.
Ghosh, who is in Agartala campaigning for Trinamool Congress (TMC) for the civic body polls, was charged after alleged violence was witnessed when she was passing by the BJP meeting. She allegedly used foul language and pelted stones, causing chaos that resulted in injuries to BJP workers.
The actor-turned-politician then tried to run over some of these workers, according to the FIR. ThePrint has accessed the FIR.
“She also uttered some words using foul filthy language and also pelted stoned owing to which the public gathered there at the meeting/programmed started running in all directions…some of the BJP supporters also suffered minor injuries. It is further alleged that Sayani Ghosh and her associated drove the said vehicle in such a speed to cause death of the supporters gathered there,” it added.
In a video Ghosh tweeted carrying a purported video of the incident, she can be seen passing by the meeting and screaming khela hobe (the game has just begun) from her vehicle.

According to the FIR, Ghosh was charged under the Indian Penal Code sections 153 (intent to cause riot), 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups), 506 (criminal intimidation), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy).
‘Abuse of law’
According to TMC MP Sushmita Dev, who is also camping in Tripura, Ghosh’s arrest was a “complete abuse of the law”.
“The video on the basis of which they have charged her (Ghosh) itself shows they she is sitting in the car, the car is moving at a normal speed, the video is from inside the car and she is responding to someone who said khela hobe, and she is responding by saying khela hobe. How is it attempt to murder?” she told ThePrint.
“They are alleging that she drove through the crowd of the CM’s meeting at full speed trying to kill people, who would believe that? It’s completely a concocted case, this is clearly to derail our campaign,” she added.
Meanwhile, TMC members have also claimed that they were beaten up.
TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who is the party in-charge of Tripura, Sunday tweeted: “@BjpBiplab has become so UNABASHEDLY BRAZEN that now even Supreme Court orders doesn’t seem to bother him. He has repeatedly sent goons to attack our supporters & our female candidates instead of ensuring their safety! Democracy being mocked under @BJP4Tripura.”
Banerjee, who is slated to visit the state Monday, in his tweet also included a purported video of TMC workers being beaten.

According to an India Today report, BJP’s Narendra Bhattacharya denied these claims.
