Lucknow: BJP leader Smriti Irani criticised Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, saying that he was insulting and betraying the people of Amethi by contesting for the Lok Sabha elections from Wayanad, Kerala. “He is filing his papers from another Lok Sabha seat. This is an insult to Amethi and a betrayal with its people. The people will not tolerate this,” Irani told reporters in Amethi.

The Kerala seat will be in addition to Gandhi’s traditional stronghold of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

Referring to the Congress chief, Irani added that a person who had been in Amethi for the past 15 years has decided to abandon his supporters and has chosen to file nominations from another constituency.

The Union minister said this is because Congress workers know he does have support in Amethi.
