New Delhi: A Bihar Congress leader’s social media posts featuring fake videos about the Indian Army have landed the party in a controversy, with Union minister Kiren Rijiju calling the act treacherous and demanding an apology. Ritu Choudhary, an AICC communication coordinator and spokesperson from Bihar, came under fire after the Indian Army debunked two claims shared on her social media account.
One post claimed that Chinese vehicles had entered Indian territory, while another alleged that China had taken control of areas in Arunachal Pradesh and that the Army was being denied essential supplies.
In the first post, Choudhary wrote: “China’s vehicle entering India from the border! This video is going viral very fast right now. Godi media won’t show this.”
In the second, she wrote: “Shameful! Lieutenant General Girish Kalia (GOC, Spear Corps) says that China has captured Asafila, Longju, and Taksing circles in Arunachal Pradesh. Despite demands for logistics (supplies), there are reports that the army is being deployed against ‘Gen Z’ instead of China.”
In its fact-check of the first claim, the Army said the video showing Chinese vehicles featured JAC-branded commercial vehicles at Nathu La Pass in Sikkim, a designated India-China border trade point. “The movement of commercial vehicles at an authorised border trade route is being misrepresented as evidence of a Chinese military intrusion,” it said.

It also debunked Choudhary’s clip of Lieutenant General Girish Kalia saying it was digitally altered and the original footage was from a press briefing in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, on 27 October, 2023, concerning infiltration attempts across the Line of Control. “He made no such statements about Chinese control over Arunachal Pradesh or denial of supplies to the Indian Army,” it said.

The posts remain on Choudhary’s social media profile despite the Army’s fact-checks.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Rijiju targeted the Congress over the videos, accusing the party of spreading fake content to malign the armed forces.
Sarma accused the Congress of using the doctored video for political gain and alleged that its circulation had the backing of the party’s high command. “Classic Cong playbook. A doctored video, already debunked, pushed to malign our armed forces and shame the nation for cheap political gain. This wasn’t a slip. It was sanctioned by their High Command,” he wrote on X. He also called for action saying, “Those behind it must face the full force of the law.”
Rijiju also demanded an apology from the Congress, accusing it of using an AI-generated video to tarnish the Army’s image. “Congress Party must apologise to the nation for spreading fake AI video to tarnish the image of Indian Army. This is a treacherous act and is on par with the vile deeds of our enemies. The Congress Party is running a despicable campaign on behalf of India’s enemies,” he said.
The Indian Youth Congress hit back, questioning why Rijiju had shared the video if he believed it was fake. “Rijiju, you call the video fake, accuse others of spreading it, and then post it yourself?” the organisation said in a post on X. Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib also criticised Rijiju over his remarks against the Congress.
No other senior Congress leader had commented on the matter at the time of writing the report.
