New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party’s N Biren Singh took oath has chief minister of Manipur Monday, beginning his second term in office.
Five MLAs — Nemcha Kipgen, Y Khemchand Singh, Th Biswajit Singh, Awangbou Newmai and Govindas Konthoujam — also took oath as Cabinet ministers.
Party national president JP Nadda was the leadership’s representative at the ceremony.
The state BJP legislature in Imphal Sunday had unanimously decided that Singh would be chief minister.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said: “It’s a good decision taken unanimously by everyone. It will ensure that Manipur will have a very good, stable and responsible government which will be built further because the Centre today under the leadership of PM Modi gives special attention to the northeast state. Therefore, this decision will go a long way in providing Manipur stability and good governance.”
The BJP has won an absolute majority this time and did not need the support of previous partners, the Naga People’s front and the National People’s Party.
