Mumbai: The Delhi Police Sunday booked Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut for allegedly using objectionable language while speaking about Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers during interviews with Marathi television news channels.

However, Raut slammed the Delhi Police action as “an attempt to pressurise” him, saying he only used the word “ch*****”, the dictionary meaning of which is “stupid”.

In a tweet Monday, Raut said, “FIR registered against me for the use of the word ch*****, that means stupid as per Hindi dictionaries. In spite of this, if a case is registered then it is nothing but an attempt to pressurise me.”

He said BJP leaders have used similar words in the past for their own political reasons, but there haven’t been any FIRs against them.

“This is similar to the SSR (Sushant Singh Rajput) case where Patna Police registered a case about what happened in Mumbai,” Raut said.

FIR based on complaint by BJP women’s wing leader

The Delhi Police’s Mandawali Police station registered the FIR against Raut based on a complaint by Deepti Rawat Bhardwaj, National General Secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha.

The complaint dated 9 December cited Raut’s interviews to two Marathi news channels on the same day where she alleged that the Shiv Sena leader “tenders threats against the life and limb of BJP political workers and also called them ch***** and further claimed that they are doing ch*****giri”. ThePrint has seen a copy of the complaint.

“That we the women’s wing of the BJP take strict objection to being called ‘ch*****’ by the said MP and urge you to proceed with registration of FIR against Mr. Sanjay Raut… That the said statement is not only derogatory to women but it also outrages the modesty of the women party workers of the BJP,” Bhardwaj said in the complaint.

The Delhi Police has booked Raut under Sections 500 (defamation) and  509 (intending to insult the modesty of woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
