New Delhi: The BJP’s OBC morcha will be taking Rahul Gandhi’s “Modis” remarks — which led to his conviction for defamation and subsequent disqualification from the Lok Sabha last week — to India’s villages as part of its preparation for the 2024 general election.

BJP OBC morcha chief K. Laxman said Tuesday that the party will demand an apology in every village chaupal “for the insult” inflicted by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi through his comments.

This will be done as part of the ‘Gaon Gaon Chalo-Ghar Ghar Chalo (visit every village, every home)’ campaign, which was announced by Laxman, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP, at the party headquarters Tuesday.

Laxman said the party will reach 1 crore OBC households in 1 lakh villages during the campaign, which will start on 6 April and end on 14 April, the birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar.

The campaign, he added, will focus on popularising the Modi government’s OBC-friendly schemes and policies.

“Our workers in every village will compare and explain how Modi ji worked for the development of the OBC communities in 9 years, while the Congress only cheated the OBC class during 60 years of its rule,” he said.

“Many leaders formed parties in the name of OBC society but they never worked in the interest of the society but took their family forward.”

Laxman added, “When the Kaka Kalelkar Commission was set up and Nehru ji was the Prime Minister for 17 years, forget implementation, it was not even discussed in Parliament. Later, Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister and it was still ignored.”

The Kaka Kalelkar commission was India’s first backward classes panel, set up by a presidential order in 1953.

“The Mandal Commission was implemented and OBCs got reservation when a non-Congress government came to power,” Laxman said.

He added that, meanwhile, 27 OBC ministers have been given a place in the cabinet and council of ministers under the Modi government, hailing it as the first time the community had such representation at the Centre.

OBC mobilisation through Rahul Gandhi

In a speech made during the Lok Sabha election campaign in 2019, Rahul Gandhi named PM Narendra Modi alongside fugitives Lalit Modi and Nirav Modi and asked why all “thieves” have the same surname.

He was convicted of defamation in the matter last week, on the complaint of a BJP leader.

The BJP has been planning to frame Rahul Gandhi’s remarks as an example of the Congress being anti-OBC, in a bid to woo the community.

Meanwhile, the Congress has dismissed the BJP’s allegations about the party overlooking the community, saying that it was Congress governments that implemented the Mandal Commission and made a provision of reservation for OBCs in higher education in 2006.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who belongs to the OBC community, also said he was made CM thrice by the Congress.
