New Delhi: From reaching out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and planning demonstrations, the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is going all out to corner the Mamata Banerjee government.
The BJP will hold demonstrations Wednesday to be led by senior party leader Kailash Vijayvargiya to highlight the “atrocities” committed against BJP workers allegedly by the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The protests will be held in Kolkata and other parts of the state.
Senior BJP leader Mukul Roy, who had crossed over from the TMC, Tuesday wrote a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah in response to the letter written by TMC to Shah on 9 June, and termed the allegations levelled by the party as a “bundle of lies” aimed at misleading the public.
The TMC wrote to Shah alleging that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) advisory to the Bengal government is a “deep-rooted conspiracy” by the BJP and an “evil ploy to grab power” in opposition-ruled states. In the advisory sent to the West Bengal government Sunday, a day after BJP and TMC workers clashed in Sandeshkhali area of North Parganas district, the MHA had expressed “deep concern” and asked it to maintain law and order.
Roy in his letter said there has been a “complete breakdown of state machinery as if we are in a state of emergency and if steps are not taken urgently to contain the situation, the same will go out of hands”.
He alleged that “in fear of losing the recently held elections there has been a wind of change throughout the state of West Bengal and having sensed that the cadres, ministers at the instance of Chief Minister are creating a reign of terror and unleashed an unprecedented violence/terror on our (BJP) party workers”.
The letter also urged the home minister to take “immediate and appropriate action” to safeguard the people of the state.
BJP’s next target — 2021 state polls
In the Lok Sabha elections, the TMC had won 22 seats and the BJP stormed the state by winning as many as 18.
The Bengal BJP has already started preparing for the Assembly elections scheduled in 2021. It has even sought assistance from the central leadership to help prepare strategy for the state elections and also contain the ugly poll violence that has become synonymous with Bengal.
According to BJP sources, Wednesday’s demonstration will not be an isolated affair as there will be similar protests in the coming weeks too.
“Instructions have been given to all the Members of Parliament in the state to be available in their constituencies and participate in the protests,” said a senior BJP leader.
