Indians know all about Draupadi and Sita, but ignore what was done to Subhadra in Mahabharata

Subhadra’s story in the Mahabharata is different from what we see on DD now. Arjun and Krishna had to appear flawless, after all.

There is an old saying that one shouldn’t keep the Mahabharata in their home. The epic encodes violent moments in our collective history. None of its main actors are flawless. And it is this shade of grey that adds to its importance. However, over the last millennia and a half, this grey has slowly been erased. Some figures have been deified and their wrongs condoned.

The coronavirus lockdown in India has revived the Ramayan and Mahabharat series on Doordarshan for a younger generation, and has reinforced the collective silencing of Subhadra’s story, rather than ‘wronged’ Draupadi or Sita’s.

Subhadra’s painful story of abduction in the Mahabharata remains buried because of the nationalist glorification of Arjun and Abhimanyu over time. Generations of authors have glossed over a significant act of violence by their heroes, without which the Mahabharata (in its composed form) wouldn’t have been possible.

Subhadra’s voice has been silenced and all the wrongdoings against her have either been disregarded or worse, romanticised.

The original story of abduction

The ‘Subhadra Haran’ episode in the Mahabharata is brief. It begins with Arjun coming to Dwarka during a festival, and seeing Subhadra. His desires are awakened (kandarpa samajayata), and he asks her brother Krishna about her. Krishna replies that swayamvar is the acceptable form of marriage for Kshatriyas. However, marriage by abduction is also a possibility for Arjun (fig. 1) because he doesn’t know what Subhadra’s decision in the swayamvar would be.

Figure 1 | The Critical Edition of Mahabharata

With Krishna’s approval, Arjun abducts Subhadra (fig. 2). The word used here is ‘aropyat’, which is strangely the same word that Valmiki used to describe the abduction of Sita in Ramayana.

In all of this, we know nothing about Subhadra’s consent, or who she would have chosen in the swayamvar had the decision been left to her. Her elder brother Balaram is enraged when he learns of the abduction, but Krishna pacifies him.

Bhagawat Puran: Consenting abduction and introduction of Duryodhan

With time, the divine cult of Krishna became bigger than other brahmanical gods. So, there was a need to revise myths, including that of Subhadra’s abduction. Many devotees would have found it difficult to entertain the possibility that their god sanctioned the abduction of his own sister. The composers of the Bhagawat Puran thus had the two-fold task of creating a sense of ‘consent’ and shifting the blame elsewhere.

For the first, they obliterated any mention of swayamvar and insinuated that Subhadra and Arjun reciprocated each other’s desires. The second task required a bigger build-up. They introduced a subplot that wasn’t mentioned in the Mahabharata. They said Balaram had chosen Duryodhan as Subhadra’s groom without taking her consent. It, thereby, convincingly shifted Krishna’s lapse onto Balaram, and made abduction look like a better alternative.

Courtly ‘epic’ romances

As the Bhagawat Puran began to be widely circulated, this new story of Subhadra and Arjun replaced the old. It licensed authors who were too uneasy with her abduction to create an elaborate and ornate romance. Kulasekhar Varma’s 10th century Subhadra Dhananjay takes away the burden of abduction from Arjun and dumps it on Duryodhan, who apparently sent a cloud-demon to abduct Subhadra. Arjun saves her but doesn’t know who she is. A comedy of errors soon follows. Subhadra, who is in love with Arjun, is conflicted when she falls in love with her saviour (also Arjun), and again with a man in the guise of an ascetic (also Arjun). Arjun falls in love with the woman he saved and also finds himself conflicted about his prior love for Subhadra. The play ends with the resolution of this absurd conflict. The premise of abduction is reduplicated and made so comedic that one begins to disbelieve the earlier violence of the act.

Regional authors, who came from centres of Vaishnavism, also took cue from the Bhagawat Puran. In Telugu, we come across Tallapaka Tirumalamma’s 15th-century Subhadra Kalyanam. In Odia, we find a sizeable genre on their romance. The illustrious poet Upendra Bhanja’s Subhadra Parinay plays with the ‘abduction followed by saviour’ trope, but also finds a way to hint at Krishna’s will. It is Krishna’s wife Satyabhama who is abducted by a Gau Singh, and it is her that Arjun saves. Seeing his valour, Subhadra gives her heart to him.

Inversing desire

When the Mahabharata acquired a national status in the colonial period, Abhimanyu and Arjun were reinvented as national heroes. It also meant that the Subhadra episode had to appear harmless. This was achieved by crafting ‘ascetic’ Arjun as the object of Subhadra’s desire. “Instant infatuation” coupled with “comic tantrums” and “threats to suicide” were used to define her story. Tara Charan Shikdar’s Bengali Bhadra-Arjun (1852) and Bhargavam Varerkar’s Marathi Sannyashache Lagna (1945) shows her actively pursuing Arjun, flouting the restraints Balaram imposed on her. B.R. Chopra’s 1988 TV series Mahabharat went as far as to show her abducting him. One wonders about the (f)utiliy of men giving women a voice after obliterating her ability to make her own decision — in this case, the swayamvar.

By this time, however, the authors had written themselves into a corner. They couldn’t quite erase the act of violence by kidnapping. The unease is perhaps best captured by Ravi Varma in his iconic painting where Subhadra looks away hesitantly as persistent Arjun tugs at her hand.

Abduction and her brother’s violation of consent remain central themes, though their burdens had been transferred and the events romanticised. The problem begins when instead of questioning the epic heroes we start questioning the act of abduction itself. Did Subhadra license it? Why didn’t she scream? Maybe abduction is justified if done by the ‘Hero’? And in our society, where epics are used to sustain moral ethos, one can see the danger of such thinking. Subhadra’s story still needs to be retold, but are we ready to hear it?

The authors are presently working on the novelised retelling of Subhadra’s abduction. The authors are graduate students of history and art history at Mcgill University and the University of Wisconsin Madison. Views are personal.

  1. Subhadra is an incarnation of Vishnu’s yogmaya. She is also worship along with Krishna & Balram in Puri Jagganath mandir. Your article telling half story. You’re using Bori critical edition which including stories from various versions. Subhadra went with Arjuna on her own wish. If you have respect for your own Bengali culture then read Kashidashi Mahabharata. It also mentioned Subhadra was driver of chariot. And if you have guts try criticize other peaceful Religion’s scriptures sometime

  3. Lord Krishna is Lord. We worship him for era, haven’t worship Shakuni or Dhritarastra. We have not worship Duryodhan, we all know what he did. If Mr The Print you want to worship Kansa or Ravaana or Shakuni you can do. Majority will think you are the most idiot. Arjun and Subhadra had love affairs before he won Drapadi. In love and war, there is no rule, if you have truly loved anyone you will understand, what is Love.

To stop a evil, one can’t be like Yiodhistira to fight against evil. That proves that if you don’t use tricks you cannot fight with evil. To win against evil, a team need to have all round support or support from Almighty then only one can win. Don’t forget all the support that Krishna provided to Pandavas. Torture by Kuru on Pandavas also can’t be ignored.

The work that The Print is doing will be addressed in same way with all forms oneday. Continue your work, time or kaal or Karma will address you.

  4. First of all to be clear, this article has no intention of bringing clarity on any facts but, but a paid propaganda by “the print” to appease the funders.

Well you are drawing a paraller between Sita and subhadra apharan.
For Sita the conecent was not there is evendently mentioned over and over again.
But you article fails to give evidence the same from Subhadra.. and there is enough in the later part of Mahabharata where subhadra never showed her non concent and happily had a baby with Arjun. And if Mahabharata had the guts to make dropadi confront and ask questions to yudhishthira. Why would they not do it if subhadra had any questions against it.
But Sita evidently did not accept Ravana ever.

Also Mahabharata is never a story to portray anyone’s good image.. it was end of dwapar youga and beginning of Kaliyuga and things are shown how dharma is suppose to get more and more maligned in the coming times. And this debate of right and wrong, dharma and adharma is the core of Mahabharata.

it here gain, bogus writers surviving on creating confusions and earning their living would come up and say…
All the credit goes to beautiful Ravana who did not force himself on Sita.. But ……………….( You will use this blank space for all the abuses) Arjuna forced himself and subhadra was victim of domestic violence and poor lady could not speak against it.

But don’t worry.. over the past 70 years people of india hve dealt with enough of the poison from such writers that they have developed immunity to it…
Atleast now people can comment on the articles…
For 70 years no one had any chance to reply to these implanted confusions through elite media to win awards by appeasing the then ruling parties.

  5. This is quite offensive to the hallmark work of Vyasa. Misconstruing and twisting the facts has become the bread and butter of these modern Indologists. I reckon they are new age incarnations of Max Mueller who did intense damage to our culture, by terming our histories as mythology. I request them to just introspect, and ask themselves, what wrong has Lord Krishna done to them in their lives? Why are they so critical about the spiritual lilas of the Supreme Lord? There is still time guys, sudhar jao. You won’t be able to answer your conscience when reality hits your face.

  6. Wake up sir ,either change your name So it does not reflect as Sanatani . Enough ,already so much damage you and people like you have done to this country’s soul. Don’t be mordern Rawana giving reflection of sadhu, Be faithful to your ancestors, Do not abuse your Owen family tree , when it most needs you, there is always two kind of arguments one Good Tarka and the bed one is Kutarka, God (which ever god you believe in ) gave you intelligence use it for the good cause and to create hate, work for the betterment of society not to break it,

  7. PLEASE READ THE NOVEL ON MAHABHARATA BY NAMED PRAVA , WRITTEN BY SHRI BYRAPPA. IT IS IN MANY INDIAN LANGUAGES, HE HAS DONE RESEARCH ON THIS SUBJECT FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS AND IS A DOCRATE SCHOLAR IN THIS SUBJECT, HE SAYS THAT ARJUN AGREED TO ALL THE CONDITIONS PUT FORTH BY SUBBADRA ONE DAY BEFORE , LIKE SHE CANNOT BE A WIFE FOR ALL THE FIVE BROTHERS AND THEIR SON SHOULD ATTAIN THE THRONE , AND HE SHOULD ABSTAIN FROM SLEEPING WITH DRAUPADI AFTER THEIR MARRIAGE, SINCE EVEN AFTER THAT KRISHNA AND ARJUN WHERE NOT SURE ABOUT WHOM SHE WILL GARLAND THE NEXT DAY AND WAS OF THE IMPRESSION THAT BALARAM COULD DO SOME MISCHEIF, IT WAS ARJUNA’S THOUGHT AND KRISHNA ONLY SUGGESTED THE ALTERNATE BEST CASE SCENARIO , IN THE END TO UPHOLD DHARMA U HAVE TO SOME TIME DO ADHARMA ALSO, LIKE HOW POLICE SOMETIMES TAKE LAW IN THEIR HAND AND ENCOUNTER A KNOWN TERRIOSIT, BOTH AGREED AND DECIDED TO ELOPE HER , THE DISCUSSION AMONG THE YADAV CHEIF’S IS WONDERFUL THE NEXT DAY, FINALLY KRISHNA CONVINCE THAT WHAT ARJUNA DID AS A KSHATRIYA IS NOT WRONG. I THINK HER BOTH THE STUDENTS SHOULD DO MORE RESEARCH .

  8. Subhadra is YogaNaya herself…. you are playing with fire by trying to subvert the story. Be warned that you are inviting troubles that are beyond your understanding or comprehension. May the Lord give you good sense. May good sense prevail.

  9. Even in Mahabharata, Subhadra’s favor for Arjuna is explained through adjectives like ‘shuchismitAm’ (bright smile), hriyamANAM (feeling shy). The South Indian version gives more details – Subhadra was equally in love with Arjuna – tasmAt subhadrA cakame pauruSAd bharatarSabham, satyasandhasya rUpeNa chAturyeNa cha mohitA. She fell in love with Arjuna in the form of tridaNDi sannyaasi.

So without taking recourse to bhAgavata, one can notice that the article’s conclusions are wrong. The author seems to be ill-informed and in a haste to press some preconceived notions.

  10. Hi Web Editor,

Great to know you care! I am sure you would post your action taken on this same URL. The most dangerous statements are those lies with an ounce of truth of fake references. This misinterpretation is just a publicity stunt.

  11. You call this secular?
    A. You (author) are a better historical source than the puranas?
    B. You take out a part of the poem, then present it out of context and write a completely derogatory article against one of the Hindu gods and then call the Hindus Islamophobic, asecular and such stuff.
    C. A man(Krishna) who saved the honour of a woman being disrobed in public, goes against the will of HIS OWN Sister? Is that even sane?

Pr kuch Matt bolo, #SECULARISM jahan abrahimic religions mein sab saaf hai or Hindu Sanatan dharm mdin sab galat. Kahan hai aapki site ka koi bhi article on how The Bible says “Any place where a menstruating woman sists is impure.”? Has there been any article on prophet Mohammad’s wife? Agar itne secular ho, liberal ho, itna question Krna psnd hai toh pehle toh sources ko saaf tareeke se saamne rakho aise Todd ke nae… Dusri cheez harr galat cheez pe barabar aawaz uthao…. Yeh minority appeasement band karo…

    • beautiful mam. Hats off to you for your comments. These guys need such kind of reprimand, otherwise, these guys will just pick one thing and distort it so badly and will try to romanticize it and will make it as the new cool among the pesudo-secular scholars and then will make it new fashion to propagate among the common Indians who will be influenced and will be trapped in their such kind of ulterior motives to spread fake narratives.

  12. Hi Web Editor:
I want to remind you that article in a similar vein disrespecting Islam would result in your offices being bombed.
For a publication located supported and funded largely by Hindus this is a true outrage- shows in how much contempt you hold the Indian people.
Your editorial staff is beneath contempt -biting the hand that feeds you.

  13. Take this shit down. I have studied authentic versions of Mahabharatha. If I see this post still around by 6:00 today evening (May 4th 6 p.m.) I am going to put a case on you. I have already madee enouggh backup of the content of this site so that you can’t escape that this page never existed.

  14. This is unfortunately a flawed retelling and fails on several ground. And the only reason such article exists is to compares heros of Hindu epics — Krishna and Arjuna to Ravana. Great going people! So you need tutoring in understanding the Subhadra incident. Let go one by one —

    1. Krishna says he doesn’t know Subhadhra’s true wish, if she likes Arjuna or not? Where does this say Subhadra didn’t like Arjuna for sure? Can you say the same for Sita’s view for Ravan before comparing the two?
    2. Probably when ancient rishi’s realized that some idiot will make this mistake, Bhagwat Purna clarified it further. Such a simple explanation. Some idiot forced further clarification in this matter.
    3. Let us argue for a moment, that Subhadra’s wish wasn’t clear. Does that make Subhadra tormented? In India, arranged marriage is a tradition which is carried till date. The girl is married to body, she doesn’t know or like. It is very much like what Krishna decided for Subhadra. But can you compare those marriage or patent to Ravan abducting Sita?
    4. We need to see a more holestic approach also before analysing an incident in isolation. Let us consider Arjuna chief traits —
    * A legendry warrior
    * winner of Draupadi Swaymber
    * popular among women of Aryavart
    * Best friend of Krishna
    * A known relative

What is the chance that Subhadhra was not already and actually liking Arjuna as mentioned in Bhagwat Purana?

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION TO THE AUTHOR OF THIS ARTICLE

Can you quote a single sloka from Mahabharat or Bhagwat Purna that depicts that Subhadra was tormented by this abduction? That she really regretted or resented it?

Dear author, don’t misquote the grand epics to propagate your selfish hinduphobic views!

  15. Ujaan, You are such a Bas****. I regret to be partner in this crime.
How dare you to not taking approval from me to put it here. It is getting abused. I clear it once and all, I won’t be part of such Hinduphobic post which portrays false image. I believe in Krishna and do chanting, you idiot.
Sorry to all for this article.

    • Such a shame ! You guys go outside the country and spoil the image of our country and our relics by publishing and bitching on each other. Find one chinese / japnese or Jewish student who can do something like this to their ancient scriptures ! Shame on you and your thoughts. I wish your parents know what kind of thoughts you people have !!!!

    • Hi Chowdhury and Ghosh:
      Very irresponsible article.
Demeaning the culture that raised and nurtured you ……..
      Amrita:
You denial if true reflects very poorly on your due diligence in proofreading an article prior to publication.
Both of you have a bright futures as vandals of Indian culture for lining you pocket.

  16. the writers could have stated at the beginning that they are students at an US university and writing a story to sell there.
This is NOT a scholarly article, but an advertisement for their upcoming novel.

  17. The writer of Mahbharat has not mentioned what the Subhadra wanted as mentioned by this author. But this very author seems to know that Subhadra’s haran was against her wishes . Great ! Also please remember that Rukhamini was ” Haraned” ! by Krishan 🙂

  18. Another Hinduphobic rant in The Print.
Just dug up an obscure episode from the world’s longest poem to degrade and demean Hindus.
I dare you to write a similar piece about a Muslim/ Christian Holy books.

  19. So you are saying that the Lord who knows everyones thoughts, Including Draupadi who he only responded to when she called out “Hridaya vasi” (Indweller), would go against his sister’s consent.

Where are your sources for all that you have just said?

Take it from an ex-atheist who found his guru, you people have no clue about hinduism. The reason being is because you dont have an enlightened person in your life to make you understand things. You read it from your limited view and your uncontrolled monkey mind and create an interpretation. You take western materialistic education and develop poor perspectives about spiritual matters.

Never seen a dentist trying to do heart surgery.

  20. This article is perfect example of Shekerites. Shallow knowledge, punjabi swagger and bengali theories. Authors would be pleased to know that there is no one official Mahabharata. This is no bible. It may be true of Ramayana but am definate about Mahabharata. 80% of story is same but rest is lost or different. 20 % or so is extrapolated from other stories mostly Bhagwatam. Many stories that are same have different interpretation and motivation in both the books. So you can have your interpretation and shame but do not impose it like bible when your arguments are shaky.

  21. I fail to understand what the author is pissed about , the tweaking of story to make it more cultured for mass consumption ,why is the author criticizing the character of a story as if he is a real person, author is expecting gender equality at a time 2000 years ago when these stories were written is preposterous to say the least, please think through before voicing an opinion in a reputed brand like the print.

  22. I think these authors are wasting their time and someone else’s money by doing this “research”. There is no point in reading old classics and trying to fit them into 21st century values. By their logic, Bhishma will be a bigot and anti LGBT just because he refused to fight with Shikhandi knowing very well it is Arjuna hiding behind. Bhishma himself abducted Amba, Ambika and Ambalika for marrying with his brother without seeking their consent.
So i request the print to stop giving publicity to such people.
I agree with comment above that the Print has no dare to publish any critical piece about Quran. They are happy abusing Indians and Hindu culture

  23. Another absurd piece from a bunch of woke liberals educated in US universities. Its a shame that our culture and heritage is being interpreted and presented to us by foreign institutions. These institutions have their own vested interests, ideologies and agenda – which they cleverly peddle using the substantial resources at their disposal.

  24. Do the different narrations by Print here say anything at all save two scholars of history are working in distant Canada to rewrite their versons of Subhadra’s “plight”. ” misery”? Does it mean much really?
In the mind:- purity and impurity. Both are included. Relevance and irrelevance to the times, occasion and cobtext matter much. Especially in May 2020 onward. We need to resurge human aspirations and emotions-this is revolutiobary times. Today.
Those 2 scholars, Mr. Prabhu and his glorious Team, the readers not just of Print and 7.3 billion human persons, are each experiencing such endearments of a better change, consciously and unconsciously.
I often ask why can’t accomplished persons like Mr. Prabhu not initiate moral classes for the children currently receiving rote on line lessons from their Faginistic Schools? Prabhu has the intelligence, technology, resources of 3M and capabilities to think out of the box.
But no, Mr. Prabhu and his ilk are also cursed. In this Covid 19 times they can refer to Subhadra but not a thinking/mind paradigm shift post 2020. They are 180per cent aware of a water crisis emerging soon, another virus and the viciousness of Chinese hegemony, economic woes…. But they prefer so called tragedy of Subhadra as if this narration is a self fulfilling prophesy! And criticise Center and State relations when unity is needed and many State leaders are liafing timevand energy. Peoplecare dying! What do you call such reprehensively bovine choices, i wonder! !

  25. Completely agree. Facts as have been documented, even if they are considered bad by present day standards, need to be told, even if they are related to our gods and heroes.

However, i would like the author to consider a few things. It is very difficult to get the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. We view them from our myopic, monotheistic (most of us being educated based on european-christain standards) point of view. It is very hard for us to let go of black and white, right and wrong, good and evil , god and satan, etc and then view circumstances, and in this case ancient happenings. I am saying happenings because, i assume the author thinks the Mahabharata actually happened, since the author is so affronted by this episode. If you can drop all these prejudice we have, and all the assumptions on how to live, what is right and wrong etc… then you may understand what Mahabharata is, and whats its characters were.
If we look at it like a movie, or a novel, which is how we are fed and tought from a very young age, we are just judging based our limitations. It is said, that when you read the Mahabharata and Ramayana, again and again, your perception and understanding keeps changing, and you will have more clarity, and it helps understand where you are in your life and why you are there. You can try this, and stop judging, then you may know what it truly is.

  26. An excellent point made about the evolving narrative in Hinduism. That YOU make the point fearlessly establishes that Hinduism, as a way of life, is eternally evolving. While being critical of such narratives in Hindu scriptures, you are NOT ostracised. What you say is not termed as blasphemy. It is entirely your choice to follow any way of thinking you chose. You are still a Hindu unless you chose not to be. Likewise all religions have to evolve with passage of time. Like you, those who are born into a religion have to fearlessly expose the warts in their respective religions and not succumb to blind beliefs and faith – because they are scared. Else they should be ready to accept criticism.

    • Col, you are educated enough to just write english, not commentary on scriptures. you might not have read even 10 percent of all scriptures in Hinduism. Being in army has it own perks but not entitle you to criticize anything without substantial evidences. Just on being meths doesn’t mean that author can write anything on the name of journalism and save ass by writing Views are personal. If they are Personal, F***king write them on blog or personal journal.
P.S. It was expected from you. No hard feelings.

    • Dear Col,

A person is free to their opinion, I agree. But is one also free to misquote from a scripture? Show the wrong reference? Draw wrong inference? Give twisted explanation to unsaid phrase? Reject any other reference which clarifies the obscurity?

Well, if you and the author of this article, devoid of true understanding of the epic, are free to your voice your opinion, I am sure you would agree, we too have right to put the interpretation in the right perspective and not let some fools misquote it.

  27. Interesting analysis, though the authors seem to be making their own assumptions on the other side as well. Mahabharat has several sub-plots, many of which are not adequately elaborated in the epic itself, but find detailing in other historical scriptures, for example Bhagvat Puran. Overall, all the ‘hindu’ scriptures do tie up in a consistent thread without any major contradiction and this is a very significant feature of all the ‘hindu’ scriptures.

The comment in the first response to this article is unfortunate. There is no reason to compare what would happen if a critique was done on another religious book. I believe this is where ‘hinduism’ is distinctly different, throwing itself open to interpretations. This itself gives it a resolute strength that makes it tower over others.

  28. Ignore Seeta ?

    Seeta performed fellatio on Ravana

The Satanic Verse is that Ravana made Seeta perform fellatio ! dindooohindoo !

Book III : Aranya Kanda – The Forest Trek

    Chapter [Sarga] 52

    तस्यास्तत्सुनसं वक्त्रमाकाशे रावणाङ्कगम्।

    न रराज विना रामं विनालमिव पङ्कजम्।।3.52.18।।

Sita’s face with her beautiful nose on Ravana’s lap and not on Rama’s, shone no more like a lotus without its stalk.

NOTE – SITA’S NOSE WAS IN RAVANA’S LAP ! WHAT WAS HER NOSE DOING IN RAVANA;’S LAP ? THE NOSE IS NEAR THE MOUTH ! IT IS FELLATIO !

Sita’s face looked beautiful with her smooth forehead, shining hair and spotless complexion like the inside of a lotus, with clean, white, shining teeth, a nice nose and lovely red lips. She was continuously weeping and wiping her tears. Her face which was pleasing like the Moon on the lap of Ravana appeared as though the Moon was rising through dark clouds.

NOTE THE FELLATIO POSE – WHITE TEETH AND RED LIPS ! NOTE THE RAVANA TONE – MOON RISING THROUGH DARK CLOUDS ! THE CLIMACTIC EJACULATION !

    • Whatever you wrote is as fantastic as the scatological shit you have in your brain, oh you son of 6th keep of Zakir Naik. Same way of talking, manipulation of meaning, drawing shitty meaning out of verses and mentioning numbers of reference.
Thank you for taking the pain to reveal yourself.

    • You forget how ayasha pleased the whole neigours as Mohamad was old &could not satisfy the teenaged aaysha. Whole city financed Old man’s pilgrimage as they will be all satisfied by her.

    • Drivel like this is why you and your ilk have no respect anywhere in the world.
Oil prices crashed your desert masters are broke – and funds to pay for your mischief making Are drying up….

  29. The article shows only half-truth. It doesn’t tell us that the abduction had actually silent consent. Because after abduction, Yadavas persuaded Arjuna to return to Dwarka. Both Arjuna and Subhadra came back. Had Subhadra not been willing to marry Arjuna, she could have told so to her father, mother or even her elder brother Balram who was furious with Arjuna and didn’t want Subhadra to marry Arjuna. She didn’t protested even once. Therefore, the whole concocted story presented here that it was her disinclined abduction is bogus and fakery.

  30. Another Hinduphobe article by a wannabe author who wants a pat on back award from the elite liberal establishment. Sigh.

    • Rubbish ….
An attempt to de glorify Mahabharata in particular and Hinduism in general….
why you are so Hinduphobic …
And foolish logic you gave of parallel….
Itni nafrat or dimag me kachara late kaha se ho yaar

  31. A stupid article by a stupid paper. These articles serve no purpose. What are they trying to convey through this article? It is clearly aimed to hurt sentiments of section of Indians with deliberate intentions.

  32. Please understand that these are stories to portray human qualities and the correct path.

These stories I don’t think are history.

  33. So it’s not subject of realities, unrealities. Whether happened or unhappened as we always picturisation done by sublimation.so flaws or flawless isn’t be aQ of discussion. No new discovery or inventions for Covid19 or a national importance . Discuss about something else of importance

  34. What’s purana says; what are the realities; these all has come through memorization . So we cannot believe fully; because from so writings has come through by many story tellers ; many writers, Playwrighters , literary, unliterary persons. And also many languages written, rewritten using there motions, emotions,& whatnots,, Somany & so forth

  35. Nothing better can be expected from the print run by dynasty slave shekhar gopta
He don’t dare to utter a word against the pedophile and rape commiteed on a 6 year old aisha by 53 year old rangeela mohammad

    • Ram raped sita at her age of 6.
Then raven also raped her .
Then hanuman came and raped her.
Krishna raped rukmani at her age of 8.

  36. In a largely feudal and patriarchal mindset it never mattered whether Subhadra was abducted or not and Lord Krishna’s role in it. As for Sita, it was all her fault.

  37. Open challenge to The Print – do you have the courage to publish an article about The Prophet with similar undertones?
And believe it or not, there are many stories about him which will be of great interest to the public – if you understand what is implied.

With every passing day it becomes clear that The Print is an irresponsible second rate magazine, with an anti-India agenda, funded by anti-national forces. It’s sole objective is to create division, generate hatred and harm India.

  38. You save your a** by writing Views are Personal at the end, because you people (The PRINT) just puke everything shitty that you can deduce from your brain. If all this theory is right and supported by evidences then claim this as ‘true fact’ rather than just put a question mark and run away with Views are Personal.
Journalism is or was never about your personal views. You have twitter or facebook for puking anything shit there.
By the narration, you people seem to have vendetta against Hinduism only (Others would have not spare you if you put any conspiracy theory about ‘Book from sky’ and Gabriel).
Moreover, writers are not expert on these or have come across anyone knowledgeable about it. Their academic profile shows so, learning things from foreign university but are able to puke about mythology.
P.S. Don’t take anything on Print seriously. Their writers just puke here be it Jyoti Yadav or anyone, based on their assumptions. They may be on agenda or funded by urban naxels or child of leftists.

  39. There is no doubt that print is anti Hindu. If editor feels otherwise let them post similar article about Muslim Prophet being pedophile..

  40. I think this writer either says he lived in the time of Mahabharata or is unaware – Subhadra falls in love with Arjuna. But, Subhadra was the true sister of Balarama, who wanted his sister to marry the prince of Hastinapura – Duryodhana and he objected her marriying Arjuna. That’s why Arjuna abducted her, under her own accord.
You make your own story and give your won justification.
Also, why are you so worried about a story happened 7000years ago. when you have millions of stories similar every day in real life.
When you hear a story or see a movie – take the good and leave the bad – did your elders did not teach that?

  41. RSS/ BJP to restore “Hindutva” Brahmanal Social order “gives membership to criminals /Goons, Bandits, Rapist supported & protected & garlanded by BJP MPs & MLAs. RSS/BJP Bhakts / Gundas adore sex and majorities are Rapist.

    • Brahmanal Social Order – you must know nigher Sri Krishna or Arjuna were Brahmins.
If you have to bother about Hindutwa so much, yes – Hindutwa and Hindu Dharma has given 1000 ds of years of knowledge, wisdom, science, architecture, philosophy, architecture to this World.
What has your Khalifas & Sulthans given. Looting, killing people, destroying others monuments and engraving their names, causing distruction to mankind. What else have you given to this World till today?
So, just keep your ways to your self and look at your face in the mirror daily – you might not have even washed it for weeks if you were in Arabia .

      • But many who were raped by Khilji or Ghore in India are converted to Islam and are over 150 millions in this land . But shamelessly they still vouch for those who were the cause.

      • Yeah there was 11 rapes commitee in 7th century by a rangeela rasool the first asaram of the world who was such a pedophile that he raped his friends 6 years old daughter when he himself was of her grandpa’s age.
Chuslam is the threat to humanity, the world is recognising the evil who is in a pact with naxali and Marxists to wipe out humanity and establish islamofascism the new version of nazism

  42. The surnames of the two chowdhary, and Ghosh. Bongs will always be idiots and crook the core. These bongs are thugs to Indian society

    • Once Bengal produced extremely sincere and brainy people. Now it is factory to produce naxels and librabdus who are just dumb shitheads.

  43. When there is an empty space in a story, we deduce theories for those spaces. When we deduce stories
Those should either or/all of thought provoking, tell, positive thoughts, etc. Not negative thoughts.

Am just curious if any wrote this kind of critical piece about khuran, would THE PRINT will print this . I dont think so. Be ause all the Print offices eill be burnt in next minute.

I know that ur media is biased hinduphobic. I would like a reply. If u dont think so.

    • This news comes with a Sino-Islamic leftist ideology. Who had completely compromised to the Left and Islamic propagandists by taking money. They were in action since Left parties supported Indira Gandhi in 1960 to be as PM and they took over our education system. They wrote highly about those criminals who destroyed Hindus and dharma, and wrote a para about our great kings and culture.
These guys of the Europe and the Middle East used to come and pay in Gold and buy goods made in India as they did not even have industry to make cloths. Remember the movie – The Ten Commandments Mosses introduces a file cloth and says to the king “My Lord now I introduce the finest cloth in the World – from India – they call it Silk”. They used to wear animal hides and leaves as clothing in those days.
When they found they were paying through their nose in Gold they planned to attack India and loot – that’s how their mind set is.
Many of those who write such comments about Hindu culture and Dharma – had their forefathers from this same culture and were converted. They forget their mother and glorify those who either killed their own fore fathers or forcefully converted them by the point of sword.

      • The authors seem to be trying to view an ancient culture which was far superior in protecting all of its citizens through the very narrow lens of what’s politically correct in today’s consumerist throwaway society . In the guise of giving freedom (such views reject the absolute authority of God) and with it the protections that everyone was afforded in a God conscious society.

    • Harming Hindu’s belief gives bread and butter to The Print .. They don’t have guts to try this on Quraan

    • Let me have the honor to give you a reply, Shriman Hari.
Its people like you who have mis-used and abused the sentiments of innocent public. Who are responsible for bringing un-touch ability in the society and minted money like anything. It is because of people like you that Maharishi Daya Nand, Swami Vivekanand other scholars had to come forward to put an end to ill-practices. You have a vested interest in hiding the facts and it is evident from your rant. I am pretty sure you come from a certain caste but I am a proud Hindu JAT from Haryana and would be interested to have a ‘Shashtrath’ not only on this topic but other issues as well.
