The selected cartoons appeared first in other publications, either in print or online or on social media, and are credited appropriately.

In the lead cartoon, Keshav in The Hindu shows how the Narendra Modi government wants to appropriate Ambedkar to appease voters, but its measures seem a little half-hearted. Similarly, R. Prasad does a clever take on how little right-wing nationalists know Ambedkar. The cartoonist shows an imagined scenario in which Godse tells Ambedkar that he killed the man who ‘tricked’ him in the Poona Pact of 1932 where seats were to be reserved for the ‘depressed classes’.

People’s disenchantment with political parties like the Congress and the BJP continues to be a dominant theme in cartoons. Alok Nirantar draws the absurdity of politicians fasting on issues rather than working on them, while the poor continue to suffer in India.

Ishtayeque Ansari shows the hypocrisy of right-wing groups like the Karni Sena who do not hit the streets to protest the rapes and murder of children, but are outraged by film scripts.

Satish Acharya in Mail Today illustrates Narendra Modi and Amit Shah’s attempts at damage control after events like the Unnao and Kathua rape cases.
