Kolkata, Aug 18 (PTI) A woman died after a portion of a three-storey old building collapsed in the Malapara area here on Tuesday, police said.
The incident occurred around 5 am, following which police and disaster management personnel rushed to the spot and launched an operation, a senior police officer said.
“A portion of the old building collapsed this morning. One woman, found trapped under the debris, was taken to a hospital where doctors declared her dead. All others who were trapped have been evacuated,” he said.
The deceased was identified as Urmila Sahu, the officer said.
According to locals, the building was around 200 years old.
Police suspect that the structure might have been weakened by heavy rain that lashed Kolkata on Monday. However, the exact cause of the collapse was being ascertained, the officer said. PTI SCH BDC
