West Bengal: JU teachers seek minister’s intervention over promotion delay

Kolkata, Aug 18 (PTI) The Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) on Tuesday sought the intervention of West Bengal Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay over delays in the promotions.

In a letter submitted to the minister on Monday, JUTA said the Higher Education Department had issued revised promotion guidelines on July 15 but directed that they be implemented retrospectively from January 1, 2025.

The teachers’ body said the move had created difficulties for teachers whose promotions fell between January 1, 2025 and July 14, 2026, as several cases had already been approved or were at an advanced stage of processing under the earlier norms.

JUTA also raised concerns over changes in the minimum eligibility criteria under the revised guidelines.

For instance, teachers seeking promotion to associate professor are now required to complete two courses instead of one, without being given additional time to meet the revised requirement, the association said.

JUTA claimed that the university’s Executive Council had earlier allowed additional time for completion of such courses.

JUTA general secretary Partha Pratim Roy said an Executive Council meeting scheduled for August 6 to discuss implementation of the revised promotion rules and related issues was later postponed.

“Teachers’ promotion processes cannot remain stalled indefinitely,” the association said, adding that it had approached the minister as part of its efforts to resolve the issue through democratic means.

The teachers’ body warned that it would be compelled to take “difficult decisions” if there was no progress despite its representations. PTI SUS SOM
