New Delhi: Days after stand-up comedian and actor Vir Das made the headlines for his monologue on ‘Two Indias’, delivered at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., a screenshot of his Wikipedia page has gone viral on social media, which claims his name is “Vir Abdullah Das”.
The unknown person who edited Das’s Wikipedia site also wrote that “Vir Abdullah Das is a Pakistani Indian Muslim comedian, actor and musician” and that “he doesn’t know about father he have doubt on many people and he made pregnant his sister at age of 12 and he went to jail”.
A user calling himself Agent Vinod on Twitter shared the screenshot with the caption: “Arre ye toh ‘Abdul’ nikla”. It was liked by over 3,723 people and retweeted over 1,399 times. The user later commented on his own post and wrote, “P.S. This seems to be Wikipedia satire by some Random Mysterious RW”.

Another user called Ronak Modi wrote, “Name changed to Vir Das, removed Abdullah as cannot play victim card on this mistake”.

The comedian was also called “Vir Das Aliases Vir Abdullah Das” on Facebook. User Santanu Saikia wrote, “#VirDas alias “Vir Abdullah Das” has crossed the limits. “Playing with the respect of our Motherland. He peddled anti-India propaganda under the garb of comedy just for cheap publicity…”
The same screenshot was also shared widely on various WhatsApp groups.
Fact check
According to the Wikipedia website, Das’s page was edited by a person named “MusikBot II” on 17 November, after the “Two Indias” monologue attracted huge criticism and two police complaints against him Thursday, The Indian Express reported.
None of the edits is true. Vir Das was born to Ranu Das and Madhur Das in Dehradun in 1979. His father used to work for an Indian food-processing company, and his mother was a teacher in Lagos, Nigeria.
The screenshot of the edited Wikipedia page, which has now been corrected, was circulated to defame him for his alleged derogatory remarks against India earlier this week.
