Bhubaneswar, Aug 16 (PTI) Senior IPS officer Vinaytosh Mishra took additional charge of Odisha DGP on Sunday, following the retirement of incumbent Y B Khurania.
Mishra, a 1993-batch IPS officer and DGP (Crime Branch), took charge from Khurania at the police headquarters in Cuttack.
He was welcomed by senior police officers at the headquarters, and later accorded a guard of honour.
Mishra, who was scheduled to retire in a few months from government service, will head the Odisha Police till the appointment of a regular DGP, officials said.
Speaking to reporters, he said emphasis will be given on women’s safety, building a drug-free Odisha and controlling cybercrimes.
Mishra also that since there is a flood situation in some parts of the state, the police will provide necessary assistance to the affected people in coordination with the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF).
His interim appointment, however, comes amid judicial scrutiny over selection of a regular DGP.
A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court, challenging alleged irregularities in selection of candidates for the DGP post. The apex court had directed the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) not to take a final decision in this regard till August 18.
Born on November 3, 1966, in Madhubani district of Bihar, Mishra holds a B Sc degree in Engineering and a Master’s degree in Police Management (MDPM). PTI BBM RBT
