Nainital, May 12 (PTI) The Uttarakhand High Court on Tuesday directed the Haridwar senior superintendent of police (SSP) to produce a woman before it on May 18 while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by her husband alleging illegal confinement by her parents.
A division bench comprising Justices Manoj Kumar Tiwari and Pankaj Purohit issued the order after petitioner Vaibhav Gupta claimed his wife was being held against her will in Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh.
Gupta alleged in his plea that he was living happily with his wife in Haridwar until her family members forcibly took her away.
State counsel informed the court that the station house officer of Bahadrabad police station in Haridwar spoke to the woman via video conferencing and confirmed that she was safe.
Petitioner’s counsel Ajit Kumar Yadav contested this, stating the woman was under fear and pressure from her parents. Yadav requested that she be produced before the court so she could make a statement of her own free will without external influence.
Then the court directed the SSP, Haridwar to coordinate with police authorities in Ambedkar Nagar to ensure her presence.
The matter is listed for further hearing on May 18. PTI COR AKY AKY KVK KVK
