Lucknow, Jun 10 (PTI) Amid special prayers and ‘havans’ across Uttar Pradesh to mark Narendra Modi becoming the longest continuously serving prime minister of the country, the state Congress on Wednesday claimed that the occasion was being used to hide the government’s “failures” on different fronts.
Modi on Wednesday surpassed Jawaharlal Nehru’s record of 4,398 days in office as an elected prime minister following the 1952 general elections. Nehru’s stint from 1947 to 1952 was as head of an interim government as elections were not held till 1952.
With the BJP celebrating Modi’s feat across the state, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai questioned the celebrations, and accused the saffron camp of trying to divert attention from its failures.
Rai said the 12 years of Modi government would be remembered for “unemployment, inflation and corruption”, claiming that more than 90 competitive exam papers had been leaked across the country, with several recruitment exams affected in Uttar Pradesh.
He also alleged that the government failed to generate employment and said people were being given free ration instead of adequate job opportunities.
“The BJP government has snatched work from people’s hands and handed them ration bags,” Rai said, alleging that inflation had caused distress among the people.
He also claimed that India’s position on several economic indicators had worsened, and criticised the government’s handling of education, jobs and prices.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav also targeted the BJP government and alleged that corruption, inflation and unemployment had increased in the state.
In a statement, Yadav alleged that law and order had deteriorated in Uttar Pradesh, while the government neglected the health and education sectors.
The BJP would face defeat in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh elections, Yadav claimed, adding that the Samajwadi Party would focus on employment, farmers, industries, health and education if voted to power. PTI KIS ARI
