Jaipur, Jul 31 (PTI) Two women died after childbirth at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Bhilwara, taking the number of maternal deaths reported at the district government hospital this month to seven.
The deaths occurred on Wednesday night, officials said.
One of the women had delivered at a hospital in Shahpura and was referred to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in critical condition, while the other had delivered at the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Bhilwara.
Mahatma Gandhi Hospital Superintendent Dr Arun Gaur said 22-year-old Sugna Mohan Bairwa, a resident of the Kothari area, was referred from Shahpura in a critical condition after delivery.
She was admitted to the medical ICU in shock, with an unrecordable blood pressure and a haemoglobin level of 1.8 gm/dL, indicating severe anaemia, he said.
Despite treatment by a team of specialists, she died due to severe shock and acute anaemia, Gaur said.
The second woman, 18-year-old Rani Bhura Banjara of Patel Nagar, delivered her first child at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital.
Soon after delivery, she developed seizures followed by excessive bleeding. Medical tests showed abnormal D-dimer, Gaur said.
Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Sanjeev Kumar Sharma said inquiries have been ordered into both cases.
Health officials said neither woman had been identified as a high-risk pregnancy. They are collecting antenatal care records, hospital documents, sonography reports and other relevant medical records to ascertain the cause of the deaths.
The exact cause of death has not yet been established, and a detailed report will be submitted after completion of the inquiry, the officials said.
Leader of Opposition in Rajasthan Assembly Tikaram Jully termed the deaths as “heart-rending” and alleged that the incidents reflected the failure of the state government’s healthcare system.
Referring to recent maternal deaths reported from Kota, Bikaner, Bhilwara, Banswara and other districts, he alleged that the recurring incidents exposed serious shortcomings in the state’s healthcare services.
With the death of two women on Wednesday, the total number of recent maternal deaths in the state has gone up to 21.
