Two phone calls & a Rs 200 cr demand: Delhi woman files FIR alleging extortion bid by Goldy Brar

The caller, who claimed to be Brar’s associate, told the woman that failing to pay the amount would bring grave danger to her and her husband’s lives, according to police.

New Delhi: A 50-year-old woman living in north Delhi’s affluent Civil Lines area allegedly received two calls from an associate of fugitive terrorist Satinderjeet Singh alias Goldy Brar demanding Rs 200 crore, the Delhi Police said on Tuesday. An FIR has been filed at the Civil Lines police station under BNS sections related to criminal intimidation, extortion and criminal conspiracy based on a complaint filed by the woman.

According to the complainant, she received the first call from an international number on her WhatsApp account on the evening of 7 September. “The caller introduced himself as Brar’s associate and demanded Rs 200 crores, and informed her that failing to pay up would bring grave danger to her and her husband’s lives,” said an officer aware of the matter.

However, the woman “did not take it too seriously” and it was only after she received a second call the same day at around 10:41 pm that she approached the police, said the officer.

“On receiving a complaint of extortion from a foreign number by the complainant, an FIR has been registered in PS Civil Lines,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (North) Niharika Bhatt said. Bhatt added that the complainant has changed the extortion amount twice so police are investigating the facts of the matter.

According to the DCP, the complainant hails from an affluent family involved in a real estate business in Delhi-NCR. She added that the complainant is currently engaged in a “family dispute” following the death of her father-in-law.

Brar, according to US authorities, is the North America kingpin of the Lawrence Bishnoi organised crime group. He was also charged in a wider US indictment over the June 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and Sikh separatist who was shot outside a gurdwara in British Columbia, Canada. In August, an audio clip had emerged purportedly of a phone call between Brar and UK-based Sikh separatist Paramjit Singh Pamma in which the former accepted he killed Nijjar.
