Betul, Jun 10 (PTI) Two brothers died while constructing a septic tank in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district on Wednesday, while another person who went to rescue them is in critical condition, police said.

The exact cause of the death is under investigation; however, villagers claimed suffocation or inhalation of accumulated gas could have led to the incident.

The incident occurred in Bhagat Singh Ward of Parmandal village under the jurisdiction of Multai police station.

Police officer Narendra Singh Parihar said that the septic tank’s construction was underway at the house of Omprakash, a resident of Parmandal village.

He said Sanjay Panwar (30) descended into the tank in the evening. As he didn’t return for a long time, his elder brother, Vijay Panwar (38), entered the tank, but he also failed to return.

When Mukesh Parihar (30), who was working with the brothers, checked on them, he found them lying unconscious.

Police said Mukesh raised an alarm, but lost consciousness apparently due to accumulated gas. All three were subsequently brought to the government hospital in Multai, where doctors declared Sanjay and Vijay dead after examination.

Mukesh was referred to the district hospital in a critical condition.

Locals mentioned that the under-construction septic tank had been opened after about a month, and the two brothers could have died due to suffocation.

District Hospital official Gajendra Meena said that the cause of death would only be confirmed after the post-mortem examination. PTI COR MAS NSK
