Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jul 6 (PTI) Twelve people, including five women, have been arrested for allegedly attempting to convert Hindus to Christianity by offering inducements in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, officials said on Monday.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar said police raided a gathering in Jarauda village on Saturday following a complaint by some Hindu organisations.
The accused were trying to persuade people to embrace Christianity by offering inducements, he said, adding police arrested 12 people from the spot.
Three diaries, three religious books and six mobile phones were seized during the raid, Kumar said.
He said a case has been registered against 14 people under the relevant provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.
While 12 people have been arrested, two others, identified as Rashid and Monis, who allegedly provided the venue for the gathering, are absconding.
Efforts are underway to trace them, he added.
In a separate incident, Kumar said police on Saturday registered a case against Maulana Hifzurrahman, in-charge of Madrasa Darul Uloom Rahima, and his son Zubair Ansari for allegedly converting Hindus to Islam in Phulat village.
Both the accused are absconding, and efforts are being made to arrest them, the SSP said.
