Chennai, Oct 9 (PTI) DMK chief M K Stalin on Friday termed the outcome of the by-elections to Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies as an “interim victory for betrayal” while asserting that the decline of “politics built on false images” has already commenced.

The ruling TVK’s victory was declared in Dharapuram while it achieved a huge lead in Madurantakam.

Reacting to the results, the former chief minister criticised the context in which the by-polls took place, noting that they were “thrust upon the electorate just five months after the general assembly elections”.

In a social media post, the DMK president pointed out that two sitting MLAs vacated their seats shortly after being elected and immediately joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), calling the move a “blatant assassination of democracy”.

He extended his heartfelt gratitude to the voters who supported the candidates of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, as well as to party cadres, alliance leaders, and functionaries who campaigned rigorously across both constituencies. PTI JSP JSP ADB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
