Kolkata, Jul 7 (PTI) A 17-year-old boy has been killed allegedly following a dispute in a football match at Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district, with police detaining three persons in connection with the incident, an officer said on Tuesday.

The alleged crime took place on Monday, and the deceased has been identified as Prosenjit Biswas, he said.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the incident may have been linked to a dispute following a football match, the officer said.

A football match was held at Sitakundu ground in Baruipur on Monday, with local youths participating, he said.

“Prosenjit’s team won the match, following which he was allegedly targeted by a group of youths. While returning home, he was allegedly intercepted by three persons who attacked him with sharp weapons,” the officer said.

“Three persons have been detained in connection with the incident. We are questioning them and examining all aspects of the case. The exact motive behind the attack is being investigated,” he said.

The injured youth was rescued by local residents and taken to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the policeman said.

Following news of his death, tension spread in the area, with local residents staging protests outside the hospital.

The situation escalated later when people gathered outside the hospital during the medical examination of the detained persons. There were also allegations of vandalism of a police camp near the hospital.

Police deployed additional forces in the area to maintain law and order.

“We have taken necessary measures to control the situation. The investigation is underway and evidence is being collected. While the football match appears to be a reason behind the incident at this stage, we are also examining whether there was any other motive,” the officer said. PTI SCH RG
