Chandigarh: Paramjit Dhankhar had come home from Singapore Thursday for a family wedding. He was to attend his nephew’s wedding on 24 November. On Friday night, he went down to the parking lot of his building in Faridabad’s Sector 21C and never came back.
Dhankhar, a former Asia head of Tech Mahindra, was shot dead around 8.30 pm Friday. His son Shaurya, who was with him that night, escaped unhurt. The police have arrested their neighbour, Monu Sharma alias Mohan, who lives in the same building, for the killing. According to the FIR, Sharma used his licensed pistol in the murder.
According to Shaurya’s complaint to the police, Sharma rang the bell of their flat and asked Dhankhar to come down and move his car. Shaurya went down with his father. He told police an argument ensued in the parking lot. Sharma then took out a pistol and fired several rounds at Dhankhar. He fired at Shaurya too, the complaint says. Shaurya saved himself by hiding behind parked vehicles. Dhankhar died on the spot. Sharma fled in his car.
According to sources close to the family, nine bullets hit Dhankhar, out of around 15 rounds fired. Faridabad Police spokesperson Yash Pal told ThePrint that the Sector 30 Crime Branch, led by Inspector Anil Kumar, had arrested Sharma Saturday. “The accused was traced after teams of the Crime Branch were asked to look for him given the seriousness of the case,” he said.
Sharma will be produced in court and the police will seek his remand for questioning and collection of evidence, the spokesperson added. Dhankhar’s body was sent to the Civil Hospital for an autopsy. Police teams collected empty cartridges from the spot and sealed the area.
Old rivalry
Preliminary questioning has revealed that the two families had frequent disputes over petty matters, the police spokesperson said. Sources say they quarrelled over parking, and over a pet dog’s toilet rounds in the parking area.
The police said the FIR in the case has been registered at Surajkund police station under sections relating to murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy. The complaint names five people: Sharma, his wife Divya, son Mayank, daughter Naina and brother Hetram. Police have so far announced only Sharma’s arrest.
