Agartala, Aug 8 (PTI) Tripura Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Saturday told police to take action against him after a team of cops asked party leaders whether they have permission for erecting a temporary stage near City Centre here to live-stream party leader Rahul Gandhi’s interaction with students in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj.
Hundreds of Congress leaders and supporters gathered near City Centre to watch the live-streaming of the programme, ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’, in which Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi interacted with students over the alleged NEET paper leak issue.
The programme was held amid heavy deployment of security personnel, with senior Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman and Youth Congress state president Neel Kamal Saha among those present.
Around 1 pm, a police team reached the venue and asked the organisers whether they had obtained permission from the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) for erecting the stage.
Roy Barman objected to the police intervention, saying the Youth Congress had already obtained permission from the police to organise the programme.
“This is a temporary stage for putting up an LED screen to watch Rahul Gandhi’s interaction in Prayagraj. Since it is not a permanent structure, we do not need permission from the civic body,” Roy Barman said.
“Lodge an FIR, arrest me or do whatever you can. You can drive a bulldozer over me, but we will live-stream the programme from this place for which the police have given permission,” the Congress MLA was heard saying.
Following the exchange, the police team allowed the programme to go ahead.
The Congress had organised the live-streaming event to enable party workers and supporters in Agartala to watch Gandhi’s interaction with students. PTI PS RG
