Nagpur, Aug 18 (PTI) A 14-year-old girl who was among six students bitten by a snake at a residential school for tribal children in eastern Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district remains in critical condition despite undergoing brain surgery, an official said on Tuesday.
Three girls died due to the snakebite at the ‘ashram’ school at Japtalai village of Dhanora tehsil last week, while three others were hospitalised.
Samruddhi Netam, initially admitted to the District General Hospital, was shifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur, in a specially equipped ambulance on August 15 after her condition deteriorated.
Medical Superintendent of GMCH Dr Avinash Gawande told PTI that the doctors suspected that the snake venom, along with other complications, had caused significant brain damage.
A brain surgery was performed a few days ago, but the girl is on ventilator and continues to receive intensive treatment on life support in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Dr Gawande told PTI.
Her condition remains critical, he added. PTI CLS KRK
