‘Shocking, deplorable’ — Murli Manohar Joshi calls for JNU V-C’s removal over fee hike row

New Delhi: Criticising JNU’s fee hike issue, veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi Thursday said Vice-Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar should not be allowed to continue in his post.

Joshi, who was the HRD minister in A.B. Vajpayee’s government, tweeted saying: “Reports are, that the HRD Ministry had twice advised the JNU, VC, to implement certain reasonable and working formula for resolving the issue of enhanced fee in JNU. He was also advised to reach out to teachers and students. It is shocking that the V-C is adamant for not implementing the government proposal. This is deplorable and in my opinion, such VC should not be allowed to continue on this post.”

Reports have suggested that the HRD ministry did find a “workable solution” to end the ongoing fee hike crisis in the university, but the V-C refused to go ahead with the plan.

Joshi, who had earlier faced criticism for trying to accommodate RSS interests in school education during his tenure in the HRD ministry, is the only BJP leader to have spoken out against the V-C so far.

Meanwhile, there is speculation that V-C Kumar has the support of senior BJP leaders, which is why no action has been taken against him so far.

Criticism against the JNU V-C has been growing ever since the university proposed to hike its hostel fee last year. Students have been opposing the move since October, and a number of protests have broken out in the campus ever since.

The matter escalated Sunday night after a group of masked men, armed with rods and sticks, attacked students and teachers on the JNU campus. Demands to sack the V-C have grown louder since then.

  1. Left is about empathy for disadvantaged in the society, their rights, improvement of their lot etc. This idea can’t be destroyed by destroying the ethos of JNU. 1000 other JNU will be born. Eventually even USA will become civilised and left. Guns and weapons will self destruct the evil structure.

  2. MM Joshi is fishing in murky waters. This statement is about settling personal scores, party loyalties mean nothing. MM Joshi was one of the worst HRD ministers we have ever had. The real battle is between the left and the Indian govt. We still don’t know if the perpetrators were in any way related to the govt. As is usual, in India motivation is treated as proof. It could just be a fringe group (right or left) but nobody wants to wait for a real investigation. Where would be the fun in that?

  3. Had the Vice Chancellor enjoyed the trust, confidence and support of both faculty and students, kept the entrance to his office welcomingly open, instead of planning to station an Abrams M 60 tank outside it, things would not have come to this pass. His precise role as the day wore on may become more clear over time, which could establish whether he contributed directly to a situation where the campus was violated. However, even today, his moral responsibility is undeniable and points in only direction. He should return to the faculty of IIT Delhi. His successor should be someone whose appointment would be universally welcomed.

    • And what good would such a man do to IIT Delhi if he returns there? He should simply be escorted out to the street, and let go!

    • Shocking stupidity , Jehadis, Terrorists, Rapist should be allowed to choose who would be police in charge of state, University are meant for nation building not Bharat tere tukde honge and celebrating armed forces getting killed by Maoists and in Kashmir, Its states money and should be well utilized for future tech, Look at quality of lecture of Harvard, MIT, TED talks and compare it with ours whose vision is how everyone should pray some stupid god which everyone accepts in private does not exist. Most of good quality life American get is derived from its Universities doing focussed research. We are not ashamed not inventing one thing from Phone to Car wiper and talk about changing VCs of university.
