New Delhi: A 42-year-old American citizen of Indian origin, who has alleged that she was raped by the CEO of the company that employs her, told the police that she may have been sedated before the accused forced himself on her at a five-star hotel in Chanakyapuri in September last year, ThePrint has learnt.

In her complaint to the police, the woman said the alleged incident took place on 14 September after a work seminar where she consumed “some juice” which she now suspects might have been laced with sedatives. The complainant added that she remembers feeling dizzy after consuming the drink.

According to police sources, an FIR was registered Sunday at the Chanakyapuri police station against the CEO under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), based on her complaint, but the woman, an NRI, is yet to record her statement in front of a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC.

Sources added that when asked, the woman was unable to recall the number of the hotel room in question.

“She said she was scared and feared backlash, which is why she didn’t register a complaint then,” a source told ThePrint, adding that the woman said she “was at a seminar that day in the hall downstairs after which the accused allegedly forced himself on her when she was intoxicated”.

It is also learnt that the accused is yet to be called in for questioning.

According to the complaint, the woman is employed as an assistant general manager with a company in which the accused is CEO. “The man is known to her uncle and he helped her get the job,” Delhi police said in a statement.

However, police sources said while the woman no longer works with the company, she continues to remain in India and will soon record her statement before a magistrate. Asked if this is a case of sexual harassment at the workplace, a second source said “it is matter of investigation”.
