Jammu, Jun 9 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday launched a Rs 2.47 crore flood protection project at Fattu Kotli near Jammu aimed at strengthening the left bank of the Chenab River and reducing the risk of erosion and flood damage to nearby habitations and infrastructure.
J&K Jal Shakti Minister Javed Ahmed Rana laid the foundation for the restoration and construction works, which are intended to improve riverbank stability and enhance flood resilience in the area located on the outskirts of Jammu.
“Strengthening flood management infrastructure remains a top priority for the government and the intervention at Fattu Kotli will bolster the resilience of the vulnerable areas against flood threats,” Rana, who is also minister for forest, ecology and environment and tribal affairs, said.
He underlined the importance of building durable and effective protective structures along the vulnerable riverbanks to safeguard lives, property and agricultural land from recurring floods.
Rana emphasised that with the monsoon season approaching, it is imperative to expedite flood protection works across the Union territory.
He directed the departments concerned and executing agencies to ensure timely completion of the works with strict adherence to the prescribed quality standards, leaving no room for delays or lapses.
The minister also assured that all the vulnerable stretches along the major rivers in J&K would be addressed on priority.
Rana called upon the officials to adopt a proactive and responsive approach towards maintenance and strengthening of the existing protective structures ahead of monsoon, particularly in areas susceptible to erosion and inundation.
Earlier, the minister inspected the damaged Tawi embankment at Bhagatpur village in Jammu district, and sought a detailed report on the restoration plan from the officials concerned. PTI TAS ARI
