Jaipur, Jun 8 (PTI) BJP candidates Satish Poonia and Alka Gurjar on Monday filed their nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections.

Speaking at a BJP legislature party meeting before the nomination filing, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said the experience of Poonia and Gurjar would benefit not only Rajasthan but also the country.

He said their entry into the Upper House would be a matter of pride for the state.

The chief minister also said that programmes such as Gram Vikas Rath and Gram Vikas Chaupal were aimed at ensuring that development reaches the last person in the queue, while the Vande Ganga Jal Sanrakshan Jan Abhiyan had transformed water conservation into a people’s movement through public participation.

Sharma urged party legislators to actively participate in the campaign marking 12 years of the Modi government and take its achievements to the masses.

“It is our responsibility to take the historic work done during the last 12 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to every household,” he said.

After the legislature party meeting, Poonia and Gurjar submitted their nomination papers before the returning officer.

Former chief minister Vasundhara Raje, Deputy Chief Ministers Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel, BJP state president Madan Rathore and state organisation general secretary Ajey Kumar were among those present.

The election for three Rajya Sabha seats will be held on June 18.

The elections are being held as the term of three Rajya Sabha members — Congress MP Neeraj Dangi and BJP MPs Rajendra Gehlot and Ravneet Singh — from the state will end on June 21.

The Congress has named Dangi as its candidate.

Rajasthan has 10 Rajya Sabha seats, currently equally divided between the BJP and the Congress with five members each.

Given the present strength in the 200-member state Assembly, the BJP is expected to win two of the three seats, while the Congress is likely to secure one seat.

The BJP has 118 MLAs in the Assembly, while the Congress has 67 members. Other parties include the Bahujan Samaj Party (2 MLAs), Bharat Adivasi Party (4 MLAs) and Rashtriya Lok Dal (1 MLA), besides eight Independents.PTI SDA DV DV
