Dehradun, Oct 9 (PTI) Uttarakhand Congress president Ganesh Godiyal on Friday said that the recent win by the party in two civic bodies in Udham Singh Nagar district is an indication that people in the state want a change.

“This win shows the political will of people, that they want a change now and a complete overhaul. BJP tried various means to ensure that we do not win, but despite the measures, they faced defeat at both the municipal elections held in Kichha and Sirauli Kalan. This is the start of change in the whole state,” said Godiyal speaking to PTI here on Friday.

He added that BJP could not secure either seat and called it a ‘one-sided win’ for the party.

“In the coming days we will put across to the public facts about several irregularities carried out under the BJP govt and how the govt has duped them, especially with the dreams and aspirations of youth. Every minister has sold at least 1200 posts released for government recruitments and seats in MBBS admissions,” Godiyal said.

On Wednesday, the Congress party secured the chairperson posts in the municipal elections held in Kichha and Sirauli Kalan in Udham Singh Nagar.

Congress candidate Rashida Begum defeated her rival independent candidate Farin Jahan by a margin of 1,773 votes for the Sirauli Kalan municipality chairperson post. Begum received 5,434 votes, while Jahan secured 3,661 votes.

In the election for the Kichha municipality chairperson post, Congress candidate Rajesh Pratap Singh achieved a victory by defeating BJP candidate Sandeep Arora (alias Sonu) by a significant margin of 6,077 votes. Singh polled 19,508 votes, whereas Sonu received 13,431 votes. Voting for both municipalities took place on September 22. PTI SPY SPY APL

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
