New Delhi: A Kargil War veteran suffered a head injury and fractured arm after he was allegedly attacked with an iron rod by a parking attendant at a Gurugram restaurant while out for a family dinner. The police later arrested the 24-year-old accused, and are now questioning him.
Group Captain Amit Kumar Gupta (retired), who was part of the Indian Air Force’s Operation Safed Sagar team during the 1999 Kargil War against Pakistan, also alleged no security personnel stepped in to help and that the police team too arrived almost 30 minutes later.
In a complaint filed on Sunday, Gupta has told the police the incident happened on 10 September when he had gone to Gonzo restaurant at the Magnum Global Park. He dropped his family at the eatery around 8 pm and went looking for a parking space, his complaint read.
The staff at the venue directed him to different places—the valet, basement and multi-level parking—before eventually refusing to park his car, Gupta has alleged.
The situation escalated when Gupta tried to reverse his car. He said an attendant struck the windshield trying to damage it. The attendant then allegedly returned with an “iron rod” and hit him on his “hand and then head, leaving him bleeding”.
The retired group captain has further alleged in his complaint that the police reached at least 30 minutes later and “no security personnel present helped him”. Gupta was taken to Medanta Hospital by his family where he received treatment for his injuries.
Based on the complaint, the Gurugram Police has registered an FIR case.
“On the night of September 10, 2026, Gurugram Police received information regarding an assault on a person within the jurisdiction of Police Station Sector-65, Gurugram. Upon receiving the information, a police team reached the spot and met the victim,” ACP Abhilaksh Joshi said.
He said the Gurugram Police is examining the CCTV footage related to the incident.
Later, a senior police officer said they have arrested Deepak Mavi (24), a resident of Faridabad, in connection with the case. “During interrogation, the accused disclosed that on the day of the incident, he had an argument with the complainant over car parking, following which, in a fit of anger, he picked up an iron pipe lying nearby and struck the complainant, hitting him on his arm,” a senior officer aware of the matter told ThePrint.
The accused is being interrogated in detail regarding the sequence of events, and further investigation is in progress, he added.
‘Operation Safed Sagar’ was the IAF’s mission to remove Pakistani infiltrators from occupied Indian territory in the Kargil sector in 1999. Netflix recently released a series that pays tribute to the historic operation.
