Deoria (UP), Aug 17 (PTI) A 24-year-old man was killed and seven others sustained serious injuries after two cars collided head-on in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district, with one of the vehicles catching fire following the crash, police said on Monday.
The accident occurred around 11.30 pm Sunday near a Hindustan Petroleum petrol pump in Baitalpur. The deceased was identified as Sharik, police said.
According to the police, one of the cars, carrying two persons and travelling from Ballia towards Gorakhpur, was being driven past a tanker parked on the road and construction material laid for a drain being built by the Nagar Panchayat.
The driver tried to steer clear of the obstruction, following which the car crossed the divider and collided with another car travelling from Gorakhpur towards Deoria, police said.
The impact was severe, and the front of both vehicles sustained serious damage. Soon after the collision, the car coming from the Ballia side caught fire.
On being alerted, a Gauri Bazar police team reached the spot and, with the help of locals, rescued people trapped inside the vehicles. A fire tender was also called to the spot, and the blaze was brought under control.
All the injured were taken by ambulance to Deoria Medical College for treatment. Sharik died during treatment, while two others, identified as Adil and Sahil Ansari, were stated to be in serious condition, police said.
Rudrapur Circle Officer Rajesh Chaturvedi said nine people were travelling in the two cars — seven in one vehicle and two in the other. Eight people sustained injuries, while one person escaped unhurt.
The two damaged vehicles were subsequently removed from the road with the help of a crane, he said.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination, police said, adding that an investigation was underway to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident. PTI COR KIS MPL MPL
