New Delhi: Former Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Amar Singh’s tumultuous relationship with the Bachchans of Bollywood has been a source of newspaper headlines and even part of a book. But now, the relationship has taken a surprising turn towards amicability.

Singh spent years distancing himself from the Bachchans, even calling the family “indecent” and “hypocrites” over their cinematic roles. On Tuesday though, Singh put out a tweet saying it was his father’s death anniversary and Amitabh Bachchan had messaged him on the occasion. Given that he’s on his “death bed”, Singh said he regrets his “over reaction against Amit ji & family”.

“God bless them all,” he wrote.

The Rajya Sabha MP’s surprising message also included a video of him from Singapore.

“I realise, I must express regret for the harsh words I used (against them). In my mind, more than hatred, I had disappointment towards his behaviour. But it seems, he never had any disappointment, nor bitterness in him (against me),” he says feebly in the video.

Amitabh Bachchan hasn’t responded to Singh’s message yet.

A ‘family’ member

Amar Singh’s friendship with the Bachchans goes back to the 1990s. In 1996, Amitabh Bachchan created the Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL), an entertainment company that soon found itself steeped in about Rs 90 crore in debt.

By 1999, Bachchan filed a plea with the Board of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction, asking that ABCL be called a sick company. Though Bachchan had once been close to Rajiv Gandhi and the Congress, even winning a Lok Sabha election from Allahabad in 1984, an unlikely ally stepped up to help him with his debt and get ABCL back on its feet — Amar Singh.

Bachchan was set to revive the company by 2003, with Singh in tow. Singh, in fact, had been exalted to the status of “family”, and had been given the role of vice-chairman of the company.

“I am very fortunate that I have a younger brother like him,” Bachchan said in an interview. “He gave his hand to me in that trouble and introduced me to the Managing Worker of Sahara Group Subrata Roy and industrialist Anil Ambani. They joined hands not to put money, but they gave me moral support and strength.”

In 2004, Bachchan’s wife and fellow actor Jaya Bachchan began her political career with Singh holding her hand, becoming a Rajya Sabha member with the Samajwadi Party, a position she has held ever since.

What went wrong?

In 2010, Singh resigned from the SP over a rift with its chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, and was caught the next year for bribing three MPs to support Manmohan Singh’s UPA-I government during a trust vote in 2008.

His stint in Tihar jail was brief, but the fact that the Bachchans didn’t visit him was considered the proverbial nail in the coffin for their relationship.

“When I got bail, Mr Bachchan came to see me, but I was not impressed,” Singh had once said, according to the book Behind Bars: Prison Tales of India’s Most Famous. “Bachchan only came after I was granted bail and was in hospital. I was very cold and formal with him because he waited.”

Singh also said: “When he came to meet me, I didn’t feel like talking to him because the feelings I had for him, the friendship, had gone. They had got filtered from my mind and the realisation had dawned that mostly people are weathercocks.”

  1. It’s all a game of emotions. ..let them be free to play the game. ..let them pour out more of it. .
Let us be a witnesses to it. ..it will all pass by. .
    Keep watching and smiling.
    Manoj Singh

  2. Amitabh is the greatest and most popular actor of our generation. We grew up seeing the films of this icon.He may have his frailties like any great person.Even the great Gandhi is criticised by many.Sometimes to survive and excel in any fields, certain principles are sacrificed. His contribution towards entertainment is invaluable. So to vilify such a great actor is a typically an Indian trait.

  3. With due respect to his acting skills, Amitabh has been a smooth operator wearing a mask of being a gentleman but is greedy, self centred and opportunistic. He has ruined so many co worker’s lives and careers, never seen him contributing anything to the society.

  4. Yes you are so very right Amitabh did it with Rajesh Khanna as well as Amjad Khan. This guy will die a death where nobody will be there to even lift his coffin, the Bacchans are opurtunist. God save them.

  5. What ever is the narratives on celebrities – Indians are so foolish to understand what these celebrities contribute society and how many lives are being transformed and stand testimony today leave alone the commoner, what about their own co-workers in the film fraternity?

  6. Rafia it’s not right. Meeting a convict in jail is a taboo in our society. However a well placed family to get in touch with him could lead to so many here says so they might have refrain themselves from it. But the friendship in the mind which only took him to meet his friend. There are certain limitations in every bodies life. Everyone can’t understand those. Only while u put yourself in others shoes can give u small glimpses of it.

  7. Mr.A.Bachchan is a chamellion.matlab nikal gaya hai to pehchan te nahin,Yun ja rahe hain jaisay ke jantey nahin, uses n throws people once his purpose is served, Pathetic.

  8. For me Amitabh Bachchan is an epitome of virtue in all its glory. He never said any thing in public at least against the famous Rajiv Gandhi and family,Amar Singh, all film star friends even though he became a butt of their hostile behaviour and actions. He took all of that in his stride without ever complaining and here lieshis greatness. May he live long and healthy.

  9. Isn’t it funny tht people get caught dishing out bribes & are jailed then expect that the world should stand with them.
People & friends will stand by you when one fails not when one is punished for a crime.

  10. For me both of them are optimist and greedy for money. They never done anything to the poor needy or societyi don’t know where they are going to their wealth.

  11. No regrets Amar Singh ji. That’s your big heart. You did it to the best out of your heart. Opportunists are in scores. But, Amar Singh ji is one and one with a kind heart. You will recover soon. God hears your voice.

  12. While battling with life and after-life, it is really greatness of Shri Amar Singh to express his heartfelt “Emotions” and “Feelings” to Big B and his family “Please Forgive Me”. May God bless this politics game changer to get well soon.

  13. I have always been a fan of Mr. Bachchan. From my childhood till now he is my idol. Maybe due to this I could not see his negative side. But all said and done for being in his status also means risk involved by surrounding people with him. He may have been cautious but not opportunistic.

  14. Amitji should forgive and forget now, as Amarji has been a good friend in the past. No human being is perfect. Every one has their own weaknesses and strengths. Amitji should now show his large heartedness and hold Amarji’s hand.

  15. Amitji has always been an opportunist, but may be during his younger days. However, he must have surely realised and repented later. So Amitji should forgive Amarsinghji. This is the apt time to meet Amarsinghji and give him the assurance that you are still his friend and by his side.

  16. Any relationship that rises due to personal self-interest of the parties bound to end a sudden death as the relationship falls from the top.
So, never ever bring personal interest between real friendship, if you do so, the friendship will die it’s painful death.
