Kolkata, Aug 24 (PTI) A 13-member NSG team on Monday began a four-day security survey at the Kalighat Temple in south Kolkata to assess the existing arrangements and identify areas requiring further measures, a senior police officer said.
The exercise, being conducted from August 24 to 27, comes amid the large number of devotees visiting the temple daily and the heavy footfall during special occasions, he said.
The NSG team, comprising a unit officer, two assistant commandants and 10 commandos, reached the temple premises along with specialised teams of the Kolkata Police, including personnel from the Special Task Force and the police’s commando unit.
“The reconnaissance is being conducted to assess the existing security arrangements and identify areas where further measures may be required. Different units of the police are coordinating with the NSG team during the exercise,” the officer told PTI.
As part of the exercise, thermal scanning equipment was deployed, and three-dimensional images of the temple premises were taken, officials said.
The NSG team also sought details from the temple authorities regarding the existing security arrangements and measures in place for the safety of devotees.
The exercise comes after the Kolkata Police decided to set up a separate police outpost dedicated to the Kalighat Temple and its surrounding area. PTI SCH MNB
