Ranchi, Oct 9 (PTI) The Southwest Monsoon is likely to withdraw from Jharkhand in the next four days as the state suffered a two per cent rainfall deficit, an India Meteorological Department official said on Friday.

The withdrawal began on October 3, two days ahead of its usual date.

It has already withdrawn from the northwestern districts and parts of central Jharkhand, including Garhwa, Chatra, Palamu, Latehar, Lohardaga, Ranchi, Hazaribagh, and Koderma, the official said.

“Conditions are favourable for further withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from the remaining parts of Jharkhand in the next three to four days,” Baburaj PP, the director, Ranchi Meteorological Centre, told PTI.

The normal date for the start of monsoon withdrawal from Jharkhand is around October 5. The withdrawal gets completed by October 10.

Jharkhand has received 1,005.7 mm rainfall against a normal 1022.9 mm between June 1 and September 30, considered the monsoon period.

Baburaj said the overall rain deficit during the period was two per cent.

The state recorded 58 per cent deficit rainfall in June and 7 per cent in July. However, it witnessed excess rainfall of 26 per cent in August and 15 per cent in September, the IMD official said.

Out of the 24 districts in the state, West Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharsawan received excess rainfall, while 15 districts recorded normal rainfall and seven districts deficit rainfall.

Jharkhand experienced several episodes of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during the season. June recorded eight days and July six days of heavy rainfall, according to the IMD.

August recorded one day of extremely heavy rainfall and eight days of very heavy rainfall, while September registered two days of extremely heavy rainfall, it added.

India received 759.4 mm of rainfall during the southwest monsoon period, against a normal of 868.6 mm, a 12.6 per cent deficiency, Baburaj added.

“The seasonal outlook for October 2026 indicates that Jharkhand is likely to experience below-normal rainfall during the post-monsoon period,” he said. PTI SAN NSD

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
