Mumbai, May 12 (PTI) Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil on Tuesday said that tribal study centres will be set up in universities in Amravati and Gadchiroli.
“Tribal study centres are already functioning in universities at Jalgaon, Nanded and Mumbai, while new centres will be started in Amravati and Gadchiroli. The Tribal Development Department will provide Rs 3 crore to these universities for this purpose,” Patil said.
The minister chaired a meeting at Mantralaya on providing funds for tribal study centres.
Tribal Development Minister Ashok Uike, Additional Chief Secretary of the Higher and Technical Education Department B Venugopal Reddy, Director of Higher Education Shailendra Deolankar, Joint Secretary of the Tribal Development Department Machhindra Shelke and vice-chancellors of universities from Mumbai, Jalgaon, Nanded, Amravati and Gadchiroli attended the meeting.
The centres would promote research-based initiatives for the social, cultural and economic development of tribal communities, Patil said.
Their main objective is to preserve the folk culture, languages and traditions of tribal communities, he added.
Uike said the tribal study centres would help document and preserve traditional knowledge, culture and lifestyle of tribal communities through education and research. PTI ND KRK
