Thane, Sep 8 (PTI) With the arrest of five persons, the Ulhasnagar Police Crime Branch on Tuesday claimed to have busted an inter-state cyber fraud gang which cheated people across India.

The gang lured victims by posting fake advertisements on Instagram offering iPhones, other smartphones, and furniture at heavily discounted rates through bogus handles.

Gang members would send gullible buyers fake parcel barcodes and packing videos over WhatsApp before demanding online payments. Once the money was transferred, the suspects severed all communication without delivering any goods.

Following a tip-off received by Senior Police Inspector Rajesh Gajjal, police teams raided a location in Ulhasnagar, arresting five key suspects and seizing mobile phones valued at Rs 1,20,000.

The mobile numbers and email addresses used by the network were linked to at least 75 complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The gang used 114 bank accounts for money laundering.

A case has been registered at Ulhasnagar Police Station and further probe is on, officials said. PTI COR KRK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
