Chandigarh, Sep 15 (PTI) Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini hailed the agreement for the long-pending Kishau Multipurpose Project that was signed on Tuesday as “historic” for Haryana.
Speaking to the media in Delhi after a meeting on the Kishau Multipurpose Project chaired by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, Saini said Haryana’s share in Yamuna’s water was 48 per cent and so the state will directly benefit from the increased water from the project.
The chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and Haryana signed the agreement in the presence of Union minister Amit Shah and Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil.
Shah said this marks the resolution of the 10th water dispute since Narendra Modi became prime minister. A 232.6-metre-high concrete gravity dam will be constructed on the Tons river, a tributary of the Yamuna, which flows along the border of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, with a water storage capacity of 1,562 million cubic metres.
It will irrigate 97,000 hectares of land and generate 1,476 million units of clean hydropower, and Delhi is set to be the biggest beneficiary of the project, Shah said.
Saini credited Prime Minister Modi and Union Minister Shah for building consensus among the states on an issue that has been pending for years. He also thanked Patil for his efforts to expedite the Kishau dam project.
Saini said Haryana’s share from three projects — Renuka Ji, Lakhwar and Kishau — will be around 1,143 million cubic metres.
Construction work on Renuka Ji and Lakhwar projects is already underway, and with the new agreement, work on the Kishau project is also expected to begin soon, he said.
Additional water availability through these projects will prove to be extremely important not only for Haryana’s present requirements but also for future generations, Saini added. PTI SUN SKY SKY
