Bengaluru, Oct 9 (PTI) Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drug Administration Department said its officials inspected 45 ice cream manufacturing units across the state and collected 70 food samples for testing and expired products were seized.

The special inspection drive was conducted on October 8 on the directions of Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and related rules, an official release said.

A total of 70 samples, including ice cream, milk, milk powder, flavouring substances, sugar, food additives and other raw materials were collected and sent to government food laboratories for analysis to assess their quality and compliance with prescribed safety standards.

During the inspections, expired food products were seized from Savara Ice Cream Cafe in Jayanagar 3rd Block and M N Enterprises in Bilekahalli, both under the BBMP (now GBA) South Zone, the release said.

At Savara Ice Cream Cafe, officials seized expired biscuits, milk, alkalised tea/coffee mixes and desiccated coconut powder.

At M N Enterprises, expired plain caramel, milkmaid and khoa were seized.

Officials also found deficiencies in labelling requirements at the unit.

Unhygienic conditions were observed at Gemini Ice Cream Manufacturing Unit in Raichur, following which a notice was issued to the establishment.

At John Candy Ice Cream Manufacturing Unit in Mysuru, deficiencies in labelling were found, and ice cream products worth Rs 20,000 were seized.

Further legal action will be initiated against the establishments concerned under the Food Safety and Standards Act and the relevant rules and regulations, the department said.

The department said special inspection drives at ice cream manufacturing units would continue across Karnataka in the interest of public health, and appropriate action would be taken against those violating food safety norms. PTI KSU KH

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
