Kolkata, Oct 9 (PTI) Jadavpur University Vice Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee has withdrawn a notice served on a professor, seeking explanation over granting approval for a convention organised by Left-backed student groups on the campus featuring AISA president Neha Bora, an official said on Friday.

The decision to withdraw the notice was taken following a discussion with the faculty member, he said.

Prof Gayen Bhattacharjee, who is the chairman of the committee responsible for approving and monitoring programmes, was asked to explain why he had given the go-ahead for the convention.

“Based on the discussion, the undersigned had with you, I feel that no more written explanation is required from your side,” Bhattacharjee said in an email to the professor, according to the varsity official.

The explanation sought from the professor has accordingly been revoked, he said.

On October 6, the varsity disbanded a committee for approving events and directed the registrar to take charge of such affairs, following a row over the convention, which was attended by AISA president Neha Bora.

The convention, titled ‘Gen Z Movement: Unity of Generation and Resistance’, discussed various demands, including scrapping the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Testing Agency, which conducts national-level entrance tests for higher education institutes, besides opposing the SIR of electoral rolls and the proposed ISI Bill.

The ABVP protested the alleged presence of political figures from outside the university, and questioned whether the event had administrative permission.

The organisers countered by saying the RSS-affiliated student body has no right to talk about “outsiders”, as several of its leaders with no association with the university had barged onto the campus in August during an unrest.

JU Officiating Registrar Debajit Dutta had said the panel was dissolved as desired by the VC due to “procedural lapses” in organising such an event without intimating higher authorities.

Another eight-member panel was constituted by the university on October 7. PTI SUS RBT

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
