Srinagar, Aug 8 (PTI) A suspect was detained by the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s counter-intelligence wing during raids at multiple locations across the valley on Saturday to crack down on suspected terror-related activities, online misuse and alleged radicalisation networks, officials said.

They said the raids in Kupwara, Baramulla, Budgam, Anantnag, Shopian and Bandipora were carried out in connection with an FIR registered at the CIK police station in Srinagar, under Sections 505 and 153-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Sections 13 and 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The officials said that the Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) scrutinised social media activity and identified a suspect named Siraj Nabi Parray, a resident of Archanderhama, Magam, Budgam. Parray was found to be operating a social media account that was allegedly disseminating radical content of a potentially extremist nature.

During scrutiny of the account, various posts, images and other digital material having radical and anti-national overtones were observed, they said.

The material included content relating to radical narratives, glorification and projection of individuals associated with terrorism, propagation of extremist viewpoints, and narratives capable of influencing or radicalising impressionable persons, officials informed further.

The suspect was subsequently brought before the Executive Magistrate 1st Class and proceedings under U/S 126/170 BNSS were initiated against him.

They said that on the orders of the Executive Magistrate, the suspect has been remanded to judicial custody till August 17 and lodged in Central Jail, Srinagar.

Further examination of the digital device and associated social media activity is being undertaken to ascertain the nature and extent of the online activity, sources and dissemination of the radical material, associated accounts and contacts, and any possible linkages requiring further investigation, the officials said.
